Has anyone ever tried the odorless garlic capsules you can find in health food stores? I wonder whether they work the same as fresh garlic.

Hi Gerri,

Very interesting! My reactions are quite different and yet somewhat similar.

Preservatives in general cause me problems. I feel tired, my muscles ache, i get kinda irritable and catty. Those are the strongest side effects for me.

When I started trying garlic I did have some mild -ve reactions at first (mild inflammation, skin problems, maybe some asthma - can't remember) but these passed in a week or two.

If you must take NSAID's I can suggest trying a 'slow release' form. My rheumatologist prescribed "Naprosyn SR" for me. In my opinion they are gentler than taking the usual form of NSAID (or perhaps I just tolerate naprosyn better). My rheumy prescribed this just over a year ago and I still haven't finished the whole box - I use it sparingly so as to avoid the yucky side effects which I get from ALL nsaid's.

I use it after eating the occasional bad meal (often at a restaurant but also from experimenting to see what I can tolerate) ... this slow release NSAID gives me relief for about 2 days! Which is about long enough for me to ride out a flare up. On the third day I will have some mild residual pain.

Garlic has quite a high concentration of Inulin in it and this feeds friendly flora such as lactobacillus.

I used to react to any food which contains a lot of Inulin. Not always a strong reaction but noticeable. I would get a moderate amount of AS inflammation, feel kinda hot, and I think maybe it worsened my asthma (need to check my notes). Perhaps the increase in gut flora due to the Inulin (which some bacteria feed on) had stimulated my immune system and caused this moderate increase in pain level?.

I started by just putting half a clove of garlic in my meal and found that this was quite tolerable. My body has adapted quite nicely to it, I can eat a lot of garlic now and not have any trouble.

Give raw onions a try too. I reacted to some food I ate yesterday [I think it was the 'Rendang' suace].. tried some raw onions and it seems to work within about an hour [or less]. I will try a bit more and see if things continue to improve. I only used a little biit of onion and washed it down with some ginger beer. [Hmm... ginger beer obviously could taint results but I'm too used to ginger for it to make much difference.]

while we don't eat it... it tends to burn my gut too much & then tries to come right back up..... I've found that crushing the garlic & putting it in a bunch of olive oil & let it sit awhile. This is called an Infusion. The allicin gets drawn into the oil (virgin oliv or grapeseed oils are best) and you can rub it or drink it without the harsh effects of eating the raw garlic. We also use this oil to drip into ear infections, boo-boos, bruises, strains, cuts, etc. You can even take the chopped garlic & put it in your socks since your feet are super absorbant and soon you will be tasting garlic. I've crushed a clove a bit & stuck it into my ear for an infection, not too far since the clove is pretty big, but far enough to walk around & have my kids laugh becuse I've got a clove sticking out of my ear!

You can even take some crushed garlic & hold it onto your forearm with a gauze bandage to absorb the allicin for all the healing benefits.
My hubby (former marine) said his buddies in the corps would feed their dogs garlic to keep the fleas & ticks off.

a lot of racecar drivers use garlic to heal their bruises & strains & bumps quicker.

GOOD STUFF!! Great healer!! kille tue super-bugs that px antibiotics can't kill anymore!

Same for me. In fact, those are all the food that stops a flare : garlic, green onions ( also called shallots ), yellow onions and some coconut macaroons ( weird eh? ). Magnesium supplements seem to help also but not always... I must find when it works and why.

I used to take the odourless garlic pills years ago for another reason (I was in college and I heard they prevented hangovers!)

It actually did work to prevent hangovers, if you took it with a B vitamin before bed.

I might just go to to the drugstore and pick up a bottle - I was eyeing the ;'allicin rich garlic' pills the other day, in fact.
