Alright, now that thee list is out thanks to bilko, I would like to see someone come up with a weekly to monthly calendar of the diet and post it on this site. I would think it would be a useful tool as a guide to have a constant reminder of the foods we should eat.

It's a sticky, the third item listed in the NSD forum, called "The Starch Content of Foods".

For foods not listed there, you can also try nutritiondata.com which lists extensive nutrition information for many foods, including the starch content.

Have you started the NSD yet?

not on the strict NSD yet . . . . . I guess I'm on the Low starch diet currently until I can figure out how to feed the crew and have food for me too! I'm staying off the MAIN starches: potatoes, rice, pasta, breads, grains, peas, carrots, etc.... the yams & squash are giving me a challenge right now

Trudi,
Speaking from personal experience, it's a challenge to feed a family regular food and eat NSD yourself. A couple of strategies which have worked for me:
1) Have the meat be a separate item. A meal might consist of grilled pork chops, rice pilaf, a veggie and some fruit. Just omit the rice for yourself and you are NSD.
2) Make similar, but paralell meals. We eat a lot of soups and stews which I prepare without recipes. I start the stew for everyone the same, e.g. sautee onions and celery, brown ground beef. Then I pull out some of the onions, celery and meat and toss it in an NSD pot. The regular pot might then get barley, peas, beans and carrots, while the NSD pot might get okra and cabbage.
3) I had a friend save me some of those little trays that frozen dinners come on. When I make an NSD meal, I often make extra and fill a tray for myself, put a ziplock bag on it and toss it in the freezer. On the night when everyone else is eating something like pizza, I just pull a dinner out of the freezer for me and complete it with a some fresh salad or fruit.
4) Keep simple snacks like yogurt and hard-boiled eggs on hand so you always have something you can grab.

It's still not easy preparing separate meals, but these ideas have worked for me. Good luck!

Karen

Hi Flip,

Not sure that would work since we all have different tastes and also there are some fringe foods that some can eat and others may not.

Here is a sample of what I eat and I will note what I think are most common fringe foods:

Breakfast:
Always one protein
- Turkey patty burger (bought from store)
- Chicken patty burger (bought from store)
- 2 eggs
or
- Yogurt (Stoneyfield Farms in states, make my own in Argentina) ** Fringe food - some can not tolerate dairy. Also, I always add some frozen fruit... blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or blackberries

Always steam one type of veggy
- Brocoli
- Asparagus ** Fringe food - Some can not tolerate foods with FOS (acronym for long word This is a food source for bacteria... cheap probiotics are made with FOS so bacteria grow)
- Zuccini
- Green cabbage

At times now eat sauerkraut and noticed I was doing extremely well with this. But I have to make my own... store bought is no good at all since contains vinegar typically. Home made has all kinds of good bacteria if made right.

Lunch/dinner - Currently living in Argentina, lunch is the biggest meal of the day, in states dinner was bigger meal.

Will discuss states...
Lunch:
- Leftovers from dinner the night before
- Salad (any number of veggies) Lettuce, carrots, radishes, spinach, kale, celery, green olives, red cabbage, red peppers, green peppers, alfalfa, beets, tomatos. I almost always use extra virgin olive oil but some times use salsa as well (Pace Picanti was OK by me in states). On top of salad with tuna, salmon or grilled chicken.
or
- Sometimes had to go out with coworkers for celebration. Going out, always choose a grilled entre of some sort (chicken, fish, beef) with salad if possible or grilled veggies.

Snacks:
- Nuts and raisons favorite. In states mixed raisons with dried cranberries (Ocean Spray or Craisons) and walnuts.
- Other nuts: Almonds ** fringe food for some, brazil nuts, pepitas. Pistachios ** also fringe food... I only started eating after 4 yrs on diet.. before I could not.
- Fruit - apple, pear, pineapple cut up, grapes, cherries, melon (water, honeydew, cantalope) cut up, strawberries, blueberries (I stay away from citrus other than occasional grapefruit... not much a fan of oranges).
- Veggies cut up - Carrot sticks, celery sticks, radishes
- Chocolate - ** Fringe food and need to watch ensure natural
- Ice cream ** Fringe food, most can not eat dairy.... me only last year and only couple times a week.

If you eat a little of one fringe food, then probably can not eat others. But I believe as you heal the GI tract more and more, the more you are able to eat.

Dinner:
To hard... some many things I eat now. And with my wifes family, several are extremely good cooks and make some dinners that are to die for. I need to get some of their recipes up here.

Eat beef, chicken, turkey, pork (I limit pork out of personal preference), fish. Either grill, bake or pan fry (never deep fry). Always add in some sort of veggy (grilled, raw or steamed) or salad.

For me personally.... I love steamed veggies. I do OK with them and like putting olive oil and a little salt on them (always sea salt).

Trudi, I always found that the worst starches were the 'hidden starches' in packaged foods. Anything from a package or a can from the grocery store invariably had some kind of starch in it!

I no longer buy many packaged items at all, not even for the family. Everything is made from a natural food, except pasta, which I don't eat anyway! When I make dinners for the family I eat pretty much what they eat except I do not eat their starch, potatoes, rice, etc. and I add many more veggies to my plate. It is quite simple after you get used to it. Karen has some great ideas! I'm gonna have to start freezing myself meals for when my guys have spaghetti and pizza!

I must note here, that I am not always strictly NSD anymore. After over 1 year strict NSD and with the addition of coconut oil, hemp seeds, and collodial silver, I have managed to get to a pain free state that always me to eat 'almost' every kind of thing I want. However, my dietary goal right now is to be about 75% NSD and 100% gluten free. With the occasional piece of birthday cake and turkey stuffing!!

Cheers,
Rita
