Hi Daniela,

Candida is not a problem for everyone with AS and I personally do not believe it is neccesary to eliminate sugar from the start. Just don't go crazy on it. If you do eliminate ALL starch and also diary and after 3 months still have no improvement then I would consider eliminating sugar.

My hubby Jon has always eaten sugar while doing the NSD and still does today - and he is totally pain free most of the time (unless he strays from the NSD).

The only time he developed a candida problem was after taking 3 months of low-dose doxycycline to help with his AS. It really did help with his AS (see www.roadback.org) but he went crazy at the time on sugary treats and also didn't take probiotics to replace the good bacteria killed by the antibiotics and so developed a problem with candida that took nearly a year to get rid of.

I do believe dairy can be a problem from the start. Jon's progress on the diet really started to leap ahead when 3 months after going starch-free he also went diary-free.

I use coconut milk in my coffee instead of soy. Not sure if this is okay, but doesn't seem to bother me.

I've never used coconut milk, but I'd think it'd have to be much better than soy milk. I once queried about rice milk and it was pooh-poohed as starchy. I think soy milk is also starchy, though I haven't tested it. Also, it's my understanding that there are numerous problems with processed soy products. It interferes with your thyroid, blocks absorption of minerals and leaches minerals from the body. That's likely not all. Yucky stuff.

Kind Regards,
Jay

Soy is a very low carb bean whereas rice is pretty high in carbs. Those carbs can either been starches or sugars. So I would expect soy milk to be pretty low in starch unless something has been added to it.

I could not find any Soy milk that was thickener-free and starch is the most common (creamy) thickener. I gave up and used lots of coconut milk which is labelled well here and can be found without thickeners. Coconut milk/cream is mainly fats and can kill candida.
YUM
I love it. Good for savory or sweet uses.
Cream(lightly or non diluted) is better than milk as it is less likely to be thickened. Ayam brand.
