the purpose of juice fasting is to give your intestinal tract a 'rest'. the juicer I have does leave some pulp in it. but we usually make whole food smoothies with our vita mixer that blenders the fruit into liquid consistency and keeps the pulp for good fiber. Our smoothies are usually based in milk, but sometimes the kids want one that's like a sorbet instead so then we use water. helps keep our ice-cream craving down too!

we like juicing beets (good for the kidneys) carrots & apples. Sometimes we add a few dandylion greens or spinach to the mix.

here's a good applecider recipe:

juice apples, filter off the thicker pulp. add 10% whey (or you can use raw apple cider vinegar) and let sit in a covered jar for 2-3 days. shake occasionally. the whey will keep the bad bacteria from growing and will allow the apple juice to start fermenting & creating enzymes & probiotics. if you've made a large amt, you can let it sit in a cool place, preferably a fridge. it will continue to ferment & carbonate the longer it sits.

I've learned that the enzymes in raw foods are the key to keeping dental cavities away, as well as for a strong immune system. It also helps balance our pH which keeps cancer away. we were able to stop several cavities from growing & no further issues in the year that we've gone as raw as possible! I'm excited.. with 7 people, the dental bills are usually very high!

hi, I'm glad you are doing so well with raw food! I've been to an awesome raw food restaurant several times. They make chai tea with almond or cashew milk. Yum! I just looked through a book by Natalia Rose about incorporating raw food into your diet, and the recipe for "green lemonade" (fresh juice) is delicious. I love to juice but am so lazy about it. I know she has a website, sorry I don't know it off hand, but what I like about her is that she stresses that it does not have to be "all or nothing" when it comes to raw food. Cool!
Bon appetit,
Jan

Thanks Naj! I wish there was a raw food restaurant here.
I make a smoothie with almond milk and frozen banana, tastes just like a banana milkshake. I like the approach that raw food doesn't have to be "all or nothing" and this is how I'm doing it. I am still eating an occasional cooked meal but am mostly eating raw. I have a few books and am trying out and enjoying different recipes which have all been really surprisingly tasty. Sometimes I look at what I've made and am not looking forward to eating it, but am always pleasantly surprised that it tastes so delicious.
All the best,
Ruby7

we're not all raw here either...

our goal is to eat something LIVE at each meal & for snacks as much as possible. Sometimes my kids will eat a sweet pepper for breakfast! I try to have something live available at all times. the food of choice tends to be apples!

It is much easier to do this in the summer than winter. If we go thru sessions of eating a lot of cooked/junk food, we all start heavily craving the veggies and the kids beg for a 'buffet' meal, as we call it... set the table with little of this & a little of that... only fresh fruits & veggies. and we're always surprised at how filling such a meal is!

hubby didn't like it at first, but now asks for it quite often too since he's a salesman & has to eat out every day for lunch.

I'm a bit skeptical of the raw food fad. Humans have been cooking for for at least 140,000 years and I figure there has to be a reason for it in our evolution.

I believe a mix of raw foods and cooked ones is probably healthiest.

Skepticism is good (I was skeptical myself) but I am absolutely amazed at how good I am feeling.

What are the health benefits of cooked food?

I don't have Natalia Rose's book but here is another recipe for Green Lemonade (from an article in "First" magazine 7/30/07)

2 stalks celery
6 leaves spinach
1 or 2 apples
1 lemon
1 1" to 2" piece fresh ginger

Put everything through a juicer.

All the best,
Ruby7

I know some foods are easier to digest and afford more nutrients when lightly cooked... nothing charred, though!
