I saw some liquorice root at half price at my local health food store. I got some for the taste (because liqurice sweets use wheat flour!). Then I had a look on the internet and found that not only is it an anti-inflammatory but it is also good to take if you are on NSAIDs as it forms a protective mucus lining in the stomach.

Quote:

Liquorice stimulates the production of a protective mucus barrier over the lining of the digestive tract that provides some protection against damage from medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and bile. Secondly, Liquorice has an anti-inflammatory and healing effect on damaged Mucous membrane (the moist skin tissue lining the digestive tract) and finally it blocks the secretion of excess stomach acid that can cause ulceration of the Mucous membrane.
INFLAMMATION
The proven anti-inflammatory property of Liquorice supports its traditional use in chronic inflammations such as skin diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

Wow, I have AS and UC...this sounds great. Besides, even if it is total bunk, I just happen to love liquorice but haven't had any in ages...I'll get a bunch tonight - thanks.

Thank you SO MUCH for this. I love licorice and had given up ever eating it again....had forgotten all about liquorice root.

And, it is GOOD for me??? How amazing is that!

My stomach has been acting up lately, so this is now on my to-do VERY SOON list. Thanks again!

Thanks for posting this: I've already gone through three bags of it since my last post. Maybe I'll switch to the cheaper stuff? Then again, Twizzlers probably don't have as much actual liquorice than some of the more expensive stuff.

Good post! One thing to watch out for is that licorice (root or candy) can significantly raise blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, or a tendency toward it, you should not eat it.

that's a good point molly,
they advise getting deglycyrrhizinated liquorice to avoid this complication.

That is a big word! Hopefully, it's still tasty and delicious.

I am sure you already know this, but in case someone else doesn't: AVOID Twizzlers and ALL licorice "candy", lots of wheat starch in them! Luigi was recommending the natural ROOTS only.

The Twizzler warning I'm on board with.
The gnawing on twigs and roots I'm not.

I was an archaeologist before I became a Naval Officer and from my perspective, human beings have done quite well for over two million years by embracing their omnivore status in the food chain. I was a vegetarian once upon a time, I've known vegans who idolized "breatharians" and seen ten thousand fad diets come and go, most of which are broadly panned as being more harmful than their supposed benefits.

The only thing that interests me is a healthy, balanced diet that doesn't exclude anything but includes all foods in moderation.

The NSD is intriguing and IF nothing else works for me, I will consider it some day. I only say this because it appears that for AS sufferers, there may be some validity to this diet? I would never knock someone else for their choices but if I changed my diet and lifestyle every time someone came along and insisted that I should, I'd be a neurotic wreck. No thanks.

Like I said before, I love licorice and even if the "data" is garbage, I'll enjoy eating it. The key word is enjoy.
