Hi All,
Interesting. I found this article tonight while I was searching for something totally unrelated.

"Increased risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis among first-born children"
"Conclusion. Low birth order is a risk factor for AS in humans."

http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=842617

I'm the 2nd youngest out of 6 (the 5th one born), but I don't have a family history of AS as far as I'm told. My younger brother might have a mild undiagnosed IBD type of problem though... not sure.

James.

HLA-B27+, JRA diagnosis in 1981, re-diagnosed as AS in 1988. Also iritis, colitis, and psoriasis. NSD + low carb helps me. My health makes it hard for me to post in a timely way.

Hi James,

Interesting... however my father and I both have AS and we are both the 1st of 2 children.

I can see how second and third litters might have fewer resources from the mother, or might inherit immune system weakness, etc. And aren't first-time parents always more careful?

I have worked in medical research for many years, and it's not uncommon for researchers to notice apparently meaningingful data where there may only be coincidence. But you have to turn over every stone, I suppose! You never know!

Interesting James...
I have a dx of AS and am the oldest. It's myself and my brother. My oldest Gianna has a dx of JRA as well. My 2nd and 3rd havent shown any symptoms thankfully.

Hi Molly...
Good points...I am the oldest in my family and have a dx of AS. My oldest who is 14 also has arthritis. She has a dx of JRA. I was extra careful with her and my other 2 wee ones. They havent shown any signs of arthritis thankfully!

I think it's going to be very, very interesting, the more they discover about this class of illness. The immune system is so complex, and so much is not yet known -- it's fascinating!

Yeah, I remember my sister with her firstborn; everything was planned, they sang all the potty songs and all the eating songs, and read about everything. By the time my niece came along, I think they were a leeetle more casual!

LOL! You r very right!
With Gianna we had countless pictures. Then came miss Sofie and we had plenty of pics too..but not nearly as much. Hardly had a free moment. I wasnt tip toe'ing so much. I realized I had been overdoing it. Then came my son...Lordy..were we much more relaxed.

Hi James,
Thanks for sharing the info. I am recently dx with AS although I think it's been there for many years.

I am the oldest of 3 children, and the only one in my family dx with it.

Makes you wonder?

Hmm... this is interesting. I'm the youngest in my line. Just myself and my sister though. (From my mom anyway---who I believe I get AS from)

Still no dx for me, but I'm 22 and I dread that I'm gettin there. Just no fusion yet.

My sis is healthy as can be. She has always been much more atheletic than me, and is considerably larger by build, not weight. I've always felt like abit of a runt next to her and my half-brother. I have always wondered if my small structure/small bones lead to worse joint pain. It's almost like my tiny ankles, etc. can't handle the pressure. Maybe my size contributed to the beginning of the AS? hmmm....

Interesting addition James. : )

Not sure we haven't blown this theory..lol

I am 2nd born.

Have 3 birth children who are all showing signs of AS

We have decided that we think MY AS came from my Dad's signs as just now at 73 he is showing signs and he is 5th out of 6 children.
