Beloved,
Wild at Heart
I have always struggled with a tendency to be wild, and a bit out of control. I like a dare and have often done things with old or broken equipment that healthy people would just walk away from.
I had a good dose of adrenaline Sunday! It was a bit of a rush. This old boat, that I am determined to get running, just might lay my burden down! I Had Fixed the old steering, the motor started; but the Wyoming wind was very strong.
But My son and I decided that we would go to the reservoir any way…. There were huge whitecaps, were we have stood to fish, was under water from waves splashing.. So I told Nate, lets just put it in the water, run the boat, and then go home.
He looked at me; “chicken” was the word he used in regard to my courage! I bedated a bit and said “lets pound it!. Sitting at the dock the boat was bouncing and was hard for me to lift my heavy, short, thick leg over the side of the boat! As I stepped into the boat, it was dropping down about 3 feet,, and suddenly it lifted to about waist height! I flopped all over the boat, until he pushed me into the chair. We were laughing by then.
The motor was running, I was already getting nauseated. We would drop down in the water, and then bob up like a one ton cork.
We headed out into the main body of water, huge waves were coming over the bow and drenched us in a matter of minutes! The big waves were about every 8-9 seconds, just rolling along bouncing us up and down. The boat was tool long for the distance between waves, so each time we were going up, the bow was being brought down by the coming wave!
It was just right for this old cob that needed to laugh and giggle like a school girl. Water dripped off our faces, The wind was blowing water higher than us as we hit each wave!
When we started back toward the dock, only a matter of 5-6 minutes, the steering broke (again) and we were being blown into the beech about 20 mph, sideways. Yep, I had to jump in and we had to walk the boat to the dock!
Yea, I would to it again. Stay out longer. Do I wish the old boat would just work? I think so, but it kind of reminds me of myself.. I guess. My son thinks it is a trip going wide open with no steering… Who needs drugs? Well I am very stiff and sore today, but I was such a rush I am thinking about charging for rides..

Lon, have you told your wife this story? LOL I hope she scolded you. I was nearly paniced reading the story. Guess that's my goodie-two-shoes side showing.

Though I am glad you had a good laugh!

*hugs*

Ok Lon,

So I am left with the visual! hahahaha It kind of reminds me of me getting in and out of our jet tub!hahahahaha

Anyway, if you are really serious about the old boat and the fun excursions with the faulty steering-my suggestion is only jerry-rig the steering enough just to get it out there and then you are assured of another traumatic trip back!!

I applaud your courage and your sons tenacity-bravo! Do share if it happens again!

Now brother Lon,
That is a story I can get My head around... I can remember my own first adventure into the realm of classic wooden boats, rebuilding one, one winter in the garage, everything prestine, so we thought, she purred that little flat head 4 cylinder purred like a kitten, all new wiring and cabling to the vintage controls, brass and chrome shining in the springtime sun. So proud taking her out to the lake for her maiden voyage. We stayed in the back waters, where it was shallower just in case..LOL
Good thing that we did..We slid her off the trailer, fired her up and across the lake we went, about the time we reached the other side, a half mile or so, I noticed a little water inside..No Big Deal, she an old wood boat she'll swell and everything will be fine. By the time we got back to the landing she was halfway down in the water and sinking slow! In our haste to get our masterpiece on the water we hadn't allowed her to swell nearly enough. Lesson learned and remembered..But man it was great!!

Seems there isn't anything that pulls a father and son together like an adventure to talk about and share for years...

Keep Kickin'AS
Chris

Good grief, Lon, you do get into some scrapes, don't you.

Oft times I can come up with some smart remark, or wise observation or what have you. This time, I can only shake my head and chuckle at a kindred spirit. Although, you know, a waterpark named Br'er Lon's has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

Warm hugs,

Kat

Sherri,
I amsure things are not as much fun tomost people, but to me, just getting the giggles, see my son and hearing him squeal- I would do it a hunred times over.

We fixed the steering in the dark last night.
Come on out, bring the kids, we can build some memories!
But dear Sherri, it is like softball, no whinning? lol ahem
