Bush as in the Australian eucalypt forests, not as in the former president!

So tomorrow we're off for 5 days camping in the National Park. We'll probably be about an hours drive from the nearest shop. There'll be about a dozen campers, including me and my 5yo daughter.

At first I'd resigned to the fact that I would have to just forget the NSD and even the LSD. I thought I could have my usual salad for lunch, but had packed the muesli for breakfast and the rice for dinner.

Now I'm thinking more and more that I will still make an effort to do LSD for those 5 days. So I'll be making almond meal crackers and bread tonight and I will take some more eggs and bacon for brekky. And maybe just replace the white rice with brown rice for dinner. I will have pasta one night and bought egg pasta for the lower starch content.

Still nowhere near NSD, but at least I won't just go back to my old ways completely.

Wish me luck!

You go Girl!

The hardest thing is re-orientating your head to the NSD way of living, isn't it?

I have a loaf of almond/linseed bread in the oven ATM - great with sweet or savoury things on it - and it keeps well.

If you want to try and avoid the pasta; zucchini cut into chunks and lightly steamed, or made into long ribbons with a vege peeler, and blanched by tipping boiling water over them for 30 sec before draining makes a good sub.

Then your halo shine even brighter!

I have heard that finely chopped cauliflower (steamed) makes good 'pretend' rice, too.

Have fun, and watch out for snakes!

"Have fun, and watch out for snakes!"

Why, are they starchy too?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

All the best! I camped when I was at my worst, and couldn't have survived without the airbed. Getting in and out of the tent was a pain in the ar*se, and back, and knee, and foot.... But totally worth it.
Just be aware that cauli can be v starchy.... Not the same colour, but I often have broccoli or cabbage lightly sauted as my base instead of pasta or rice...

I hope you have a great time. It has been too long since I've been out bush.

I find my air mattress more comfy than my bed at home! And I have a wool underlay on it! Luxury! The only thing I miss is some insulation for underneath because they do get rather cold, even with the wool layer.

I also had to learn the hard way that I cannot use the same pillow as at home because the weight of my body pushes the top of the mattress up somewhat, so need a thinner one.

Sometimes I even put the base of my little beach chair (one of those very simple folding ones) under the matress so I can sit against the back of the chair to read.

I also have a 4-person tent I can stand up in. There is no way I would crawl in and out the tent anymore.

I have a "luxury" beach chair for sitting by the campfire. I find it easier because everything is on the ground, so it's easier to reach from a low chair. The added advantage is that I can stretch my legs out and get more comfortable in it. It's only a bit hard to get up out of it, but good excercise.

We're going down the South Coast, Rob. Over Brown Mountain (Cooma) and down via Bega. Beautiful area down there, but the ocean is always freezing. If we're lucky we might still spot some whales though.

PS: My bread failed! Because I used normal yoghurt instead of dripped... I'm hoping it will be ok toasted, but it's been under the grill for 30 mins and still moist!
