I think in helping your mom understand this diet, not only have her check out the current kickas forms, but have her do back searches. This site has been around for about ten years and has helped tons of people. A lot of people get helped and then do not use the site as often anymore. I spent a lot of time researching this site and others and found a crazy amount of people who have been helped. I even contacted a good number of them. The twenty-thirty people who are posting right now are in the more active phase of the diet.... look back a year, two years, four, seven.... and you will find a different crowd of people, many of whom have found their solution. (and many who do not need to be as strict after years of healing)

I am a firm believer that this diet CAN work for anyone, some people just need to pinpoint more triggers and some people need more time to heal before they notice a marked improvement. I was a slow healer, but I kept my eyes on the prize and am incredibly happy now.

Also, you may want your mom to actively ask questions online for us to address. We want to make her feel comfortable.

Good luck,
Stacey

Hi Seb.

Sorry to ear you are having a hard time with the people around you...and you know, similar story here.
I am 27 years old, and after 7 years of pain, AS came full speed on my hip as well. Can't walk right now, so i had looooads of time to do some research and found the diet. It gave me hope and I decided to give it a go...

All around me, my parents, my friends and doctors, at the beggining where very sceptical. People care, they are worried that you are doing something that can harm you. Taking pills is the norm, and doing something "strange", that they don't know about, that they never heard about, brings fear to those who love you. It's the fear of the unknown i guess..."What if?"

It was a big struggle for me. Everyone, everyday, trying to make me change my mind, trying to make me "eat properly" and not geting on with my "crazy ideas". As time went by, with information and patient, I managed to convince the people most dear to me, my parents and my closest friends. There are still many who don't agree, who try to take me off this path, but i am more stubborn then them wink why? because of all the people in kickas and their stories, because of the evidence that this diet can work, because of dr. ebringer studies and carol sinclar book, and because after two months on the diet i can feel some improvements, and my body seems to be reacting and healing...that said, keep on talking everybody, I need to give myself a chance of living painfree so I will stay on the diet whistle

I know it's hard enough to struggle with AS, and having an extra concern is not very pleasent, specially when you are doing it for your health and well being. I know you are still young, but try to keep it positive anyway, as if life gave you a small challenge smile if you believe the diet can work, if you believe that this solution is for you, than I'd say...fight for what you believe in seb, and follow your heart.

Like many told you, try to bring your mum here. Try to talk to her, explain her your motivation, show her evidence, everything you can do to make her jump in the same boat with you.

Don't give up seb!

Good luck wink

Seb, I have been on the NSD/LSD for over 20 years. I can tell you that it saved my life. I spent a long time visiting Doctors and other medical professionals in a number of countries. Eventually i met an open minded Rheummy at Guys hospital in London who told me unfortunately he could only advise more of the same NSAID treatment that was obviously not working and causing me a lot of distress. He then said the magic words "It may be worth you seeking out a doctor Ebringer at the Middlesex Hospital who has had some success treating AS". The rest is history.

Hey Seb
A miracle happened in the night!
Go on to the main forum and read the post entitled "I'm impressed"
This is just what you need to show your Mum.
Next time you go to the doctor you can show him too, he can stick that in his pipe and smoke it!!

Too bad, Seb! You can get caught out quite a few times in the early days of learning this diet - I hope you settle quickly.

Soy sauce has wheat in it - if you look in the health food aisle you should find "tamari" which is soy sauce with NO wheat or other nasties in it.

Ice creams can have 'fillers' in it that may set you off, Best rule of thumb is to go for the more 'premier' brands, BUT I would still test it with iodine.

Hi Seb,

I have a teenage son with cystic acne. I have read just about all there is about acne/skin/teens and there is very little hard evidence that diet has a significant part to play in acne - it's testosterone, and you can't do much about that right now, my friend... smirk

I don't know about evidence to prove it

but I can say for myself, that even WAY beyond my teenage years, when I did the no starch diet, my skin improved big time, in about a month

as a teen and someone who who had trouble with acne ever since, I always heard people saying that chocolate, oily foods like pizza were the problem

but NEVER tried avoiding starches like bread, rice and pasta, it just didn't make any sense to me

but that's exactly what happened when I did the NSD, and have read in a few places that it worked for others too

so consider that as something to try, I so wish that I could have tried it many years ago!

Louise,
My friend, you are giving Seb absolutley good advice, as well as the others here. You are threw and threw a big plus to this site: BUT, olol,,
"you might be feeling a bit chuffed " does Seb know what that means? I have been angry, miffed, upset, P.Oed, mad as heck and not gonna take it any more: but what is
"you might be feeling a bit chuffed ".
I anticipate your prompt reply and excuse me if I seem dense or dull or otherwise old. a father's love to you.

laugh2 My dear Lon,

It means "feeling pleased with yourself"!

Just giving away my recent British heritage, I suppose. No doubt the likes of Alan, Kevin, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Molly will have no trouble deciphering that one!

Never ceases to amaze me how many regional differences there are in this so-called "common" language of ours - English! eek2

Yes, I completely agree with you, Dow.

My asthma all but disappeared after I was on the NSD for a couple of months. My skin is better too.

I just wanted to point out to Seb that from my research into acne, there is no hard evidence that there are specific dietary triggers in acne. I have read lots, and had numerous discussions with the more-than-reasonable and open-to discussion dermatologist that my son sees.

Seeing as how I have always fed my family a wholefoods diet with little processed or fast food, I was quite interested in interrogating the dermatologist pretty hard!

I have been doing dairy-free for my DD for years, and NSD for me, so if there was *any way* that dietary modification of any sort could help my son, I was prepared to do it. (avoiding meds with potential nasty side effects is what drives me...)

So, there appears to be nothing specific out there in the literature indicating 'dietary causes' of acne, but I agree that there is empirical evidence that changes in diet can *help* acne.

Just hoping to help reassure Seb's mum that NSD is most likely NOT the cause of of Seb's worsening skin condition.
