I was put off at first by all of the "side effects" of the TNF's i read about on forums, blog's etc....then I actually looked up the "statistics." In reality, as drizzit alludes to, the really bad side effects of TNF's (e.g., cancer and the other scary things) are really rare. For example (hypothetical numbers since i cant recall the real numbers) but people not on TNF's get lymphoma at a rate of .056 per 10000. Those on TNF's who get lymphoma = .095 per 10000. (remember, not the real numbers, but similar). Does the chance of getting lymphoma increase? yes, but not in any real amount sufficient to scare a rational person I would think (i.e., the overall chance of getting lymphoma remains small).

Then again, given the fact that I used to smoke cigarretes, I guess I have even a better reason justify an increase in risk of side effects from the use of TNF's, lol.

People will stick by there philosphicals ideals even at the expense of there health. I have seen it. Give you an example: young guy in my ICU couple of years ago. He had a throid storm which gives you an accelerated heart rate. He refused to take the medicine the regular MD prescribed. Instead he went to see a naturopath. He ended up with a devastating stroke which he will never recover from.

That being said I would much rather take a dietary approach then take a medicine. The question for me is when do I stop taking the TNF to see if the diet itself can do the job. Still scratching my head over the matter.
