hi rumble,

yeh, could be. but also, i've found that tums (calcium carbonate) seems worse for me for stomach issues. i reach for liquid mylanta (magnesium and aluminum hydroxides plus simenthicone) instead. of course some worry about aluminum, but i know i can not do calcium carbonate at all! that actually makes my gastritis worse and my husband's reflux worse.

but as you were saying, better to uncover the culprit and stop the aggravating factor, rather than treating the symptoms.

This review from Johns Hopkins certainly indicates that jaw osteonecrosis in patients treated with bisphosphonate drugs for osteoperosis is quite rare. The increased risk is in cancer patients treated with much higher doses. http://www.hopkins-arthritis.org/arthritis-news/2006/bisphosphonate_jaw_osteonecrosis.html

"Ninety four percent of cases occurred in conjunction with intravenous therapy with the aminobisphosphonates pamidronate or zoledronic acid. The non-aminobisphosphonate, clodronate, was not associated with any published reports of jaw osteonecrosis. Most (85%) of cases occurred in the setting of multiple myeloma or metastatic cancer. Only 4.1% of cases (15 reported patients) occurred in patients treated for osteoporosis (most of who were treated with oral bisphosphonates)."

and

"Conclusions The strongest association of bisphosphonate use and jaw osteonecrosis occurred in patients treated with intravenous bisphosphonates of the amino-bisphosphonate class (pamidronate and zoledronic acid) and mostly in those receiving these drugs for malignancy. Dental surgery and/or physical trauma to the jaw were precipitating events in many cases."

As does this report available on Emedicine: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1447355-overview

"Evidence is insufficient to confirm a causal link between low-dose bisphosphonate use in osteoporosis with osteonecrosis of the jaw. Osteonecrosis of the jaw is primarily associated with high-dose bisphosphonate use in cancer patients.5"

According to the Hospital For Special Surgery, "There are less than 20 cases in the world’s literature associated with oral bisphosphonate therapy for treating conditions such as Paget’s disease or osteoporosis." http://www.hss.edu/conditions_14616.asp "Although it is unclear how many cases were not reported, it seems to be quite uncommon, given the large number of patients that have taken these medications."

*** edit/add info ***
I am not saying that strontium is a bad idea. Ongoing research into strontium for osteoperosis is promising. However, long term use of strontium has not been studied nearly as extensively as bisphosphonate therapy has been. Who knows what unintended and currently unimaginable side effects will come to light down the road? The risks of bisphosphonate therapy appear to be exaggerated in the alternative medicine realm.

I'm no scientist, but I'm inclined to have much more confidence in something found naturally and that is in the same group (Perioditc Table) as Magnesium and Calcium (although also sharing that distinction with Radium) as opposed to something synthesized by man in a laboratory.

Strontium Citrate has been in use for Osteoporosis in EUROPE for a 'n number of years - but NOT in use in the USA (who are still 'out' - probably awaiting John's Hopkin's research results - although EUROPEAN research results are out there for ALL to take congnisance of).

USA asre planning their own version of the Protelos Strontium Ranelate version under synthesised: Strontium MANALATE.

Strontium Citrat e is natural form of stronitum citrate! The Protelos Strontium Ranelate is the synthetised form of Strontium Ciutrate - so as the pharmaceuticals cos. can make a return o theri investment. wwhereas, strontium Citrate canot in and of itself be of interest TO pharma.

All info out there.

OK guys, go do your own research. 'Smile'.

BTW - court cases have been brought against pharma for osteonecrosis of the jaw - and that is for 'standasrd' administration of the BIS drugs, i.e. not at high levels! Pharma will have everyone believe that ONLY cancer cases are involved and all other cases are so minimal as to be irrelevant findings...brushed under the carpet - believe pharma if you will: Ho-Hum chums...!! Reiterate: in Europe BIS drugs asre found to have unacceptable side effects, preference is given to Protelos Strontium Ranelate, which is only strontium Citrate synthesised from the NATURAL form of S.C. into a synthesised form in order for pharma to get their investment back.

Answer to jaybird: Strontium Citrate is a NAYURAL form, other forms of Strontium C. ARE synthesised, and, ho-hum, are buffered with carriers, as in the Protelos, with Aspartame!

The BIS drugs are a great cash cow for pharma!

thanks for that information,

that was the impression i got regarding the jaw necrosis.

however, the thing i worry about more is all that talk about the brittle bone that is said to form with the bisphosphonates and lack of new bone formation. is there anything you can link, quote to put my mind at ease about that if the strontium experiment fails?

i sure wish the vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and exercise alone were working as well on my spine as it (or something) has on my hip, but strontium just seems like the safer of the options to me right now, mostly because of all the bad press regarding the bisphophonates, but as i said, if you can link info against that last paragraph, that would be awesome!

jay, that was my thinking regarding the strontium, right below calcium on the periodic table.

though "natural" doesn't always mean "healthy" as in lead or mercury poisoning.

still, given an option, i've just heard so much bad press about the bisphosphonates and a lot of promising results for the strontium. guess time will tell.

As for the BIS drugs and done density - fact. Stops bone renewal/take-up. Ends by bones becoming brittle anyways. Stuff only works initially, then the bad stuff sets in culminating (for the very unlucky) with osteonecroisis of the jaw.) Other side effects are long bone aches - shin splints. Plys another load of side effects. Suggest reading the osteoporosis forum groups - many a tale of sad woe there! Sue, suggest you google it all up. Info is out there for all to learn about. Only requires searching. Which I am not prepared to do in this wonderful, glorious weather - 'smile'.

strontium will do what is needed. Europe can't be wrong on all counts whereas, the side effects of the BIS drugs are a given, are a known factor. Take your own pick...

dear molly, my wonderful researcher! smile

thanks for all of that. skimmed over, will check out sites and articles later.

yes, have been recently going to the osteoporosis sites such as:
http://www.inspire.com/groups/national-osteoporosis-foundation/
plan to do more googling research on sites such as this and others.

now to the garden! i agree, with such beautiful weather, we should all be outside! if only i didn't have to work, but at least i have a window. but when at home, outside during the day, and mostly on the computer at night.

and congrats on the garden awards! maybe you could send a photo to admin to show off your prize winning garden! finally got all my herbs in about 2 weeks ago. they all smell so nice! and finally more flowers, may is always great with all the lilacs, peonies, irises, poppies, then the garden gets a bit quiet for a few weeks, now day lilies, delphinias, hollyhocks, bee balm, and daisies are the stars. and the stewartia (tree) has been crazy blooming for a while now, it is a fabulous tree if you are ever looking for a tree to consider.
