My physical therapist lent me this book (thankfully, because it is ridiculously expensive to buy!)

"Explain Pain" book

But it is amazing on the subject of chronic pain. I now have many new thoughts on the subject, especially in regards to how electrical signals that the brain perceives as pain are created, and the many, many, opportunities we sufferers have to reinforce OR diminish those patterns...

I'm supposed to return the book to her this week, but may have to buy my own copy!

Without reading the book, I have to say that I already like it way better than the EFT guy who says "there is no such thing as pain". If I ever meet that guy I'm going to give him a slap on the head and see if he feels pain.

Drat, my local library doesn't have the "Explain Pain" book. I'll look at it the next time I'm in Seattle.

yes, this is a good 'un

It may be expensive because it is apparently mostly marketed for PT's, so I was expecting a bunch of technical bio-mechanical fascia neuro talk, but instead, it's actually quite an easy read, with large cartoony but excellent illustrations, even I could mostly understand them!

Have done a once-through and still letting the concepts sink in a bit

Like most people, I think of pain like, you have an injury, hit your toe with a hammer, and you go "Ow!"

But this book explains all the zillions of things that happen between the toe, and the brain, how the neurons or thingamazappies have to start there, travel as an electrical signal to the cerebral junction box, where a little guy decides what kind of message just got sent, forwards it to another guy in the brain, who also may or may not decide to accept it, might get it mixed up with some other message, so much that can go wrong, before the brain interprets what happened to your toe as pain

and LOTS about how if these guys do this a lot, send all those pain messages frequently, they get better and better at it, actual biochemical changes occur, the paths get physically strengthened, so maybe next time you don't have to get hit with a hammer, maybe a feather will do it

then there's the other part, that it's a two way street, when your central command center decides there is a problem, rightly or wrongly, it sends a bunch of little plastic army men down to the toe, and they are earnest but definitely not very bright, they can cause a lot of inflammation damage with those little plastic bayonettes

Okay, the book makes less dumb metaphors than I just did, but hopefully you get the basic idea, which is that the brain (including DNA) and the nervous system are VERY involved in these processes, and that it may be a very smart idea to learn more about them, and who knows, maybe even by changing our thought processes, we can affect our level of pain!

I'll try and see if I can figure out a way to post some excerpts, maybe even a page or two

That's a good point you make about thought process affecting pain.As you know I'm in severe pain at the moment yet we had a very serious life threatening crisis in the family Friday night and Saturday and I was up from 3am Saturday and actually out searching for my son-in-law and my pain seemed to virtually disappear . As soon as it calmed down it returned. So controlling the thought patterns could help pain IMO.

Are you holding up?

my biggest curiosity at the moment is, does it give real life practical examples of things we can do to lessen the pain or at least our perception of it. not just the theory of "think differently" but an instruction manual of sorts? techniques? etc?
