Hi all,
I have just been released from hospital yesterday after being admitted with severe kidney pain & tenderness. Ultrasound showed a very swollen right kidney with visible lessions. The diagnosis is papillary necrosis. After sometim in hospital things are settling down but long term not sure. They said the cause of the necrosis (tissue death) is my long term use of NSAIDS & prednisolone. I wondering if anyone else has had kidney problems as a result of their AS treatment & if so what their long term prognosis is. Things are also more complicated as I am 20weeks pregnant with our first baby so all treatment has to be conservative until bub arrives safe.
I am keen to hear other peoples experiences with kidney complications.
Thanks guys, as always this is the first place I turn for answers xx

Leah - Check it out with a google search. Think you will find that kidney problems 'do' indeed go with Pred & NSAIDs use - use long term that is.

Me? I sure do so hate the biggie drugs - scare me.

Congrats on bub, but an anxious time for 'you' *and on b/h of bub. Take care and go well -

sorry to hear of the kidney problems. i've only used pred once and nsaids not too often other than vioxx every few days for a couple of years, but that was in the early 2000s. i have an US done routinely to monitor a gallladder polyp and just the other day saw that my kidneys look good. but thank you for the warning, as i'm back to finding an nsaid i can tolerate, if one exists, and if not, onward.

Hi Leah
Cant believe you are 20 weeks already! I spose the baby's wastes would be contributing to the load on your kidneys also?
Sorry, I haven't heard of this one but just wanted to send big hugs your way
Take it easy.

Thanks for the replies guys. I saw my rheumy today & basically we're going to get me and bub through the rest of the pregnancy as best as possible & then decide the best way to manage the AS & Crohns. Once again, I appreciate the support xxxx

Hi Leah, I'm sorry to hear you're having such a rough time, especially during pregnancy... hugss I have had a really hard time with my kidneys, basically all of my life and it has been an almost constant problem for the last 2 years or so, I've had Pyleonephritis/Urosepsis, no less than 12 times in the last 18-24 months and during one of my pregnancies, I was hospitalized for the last 2 months due to Pyleo I lost 1/3 of my bladder at age 7 from bladder necrosis...I don't want to bore with every little detail so I'll just sum it up by saying that it all ended well, it took about 2 years for that flare to clear up, but it did and I had about a 10 year stretch without having any serious kidney problems, so that was great... smile...please keep us posted on your progress... :holly2:
