smile Hello –
My name is Wingartist and I live in Wichita Kansas.
I have a question about Spinal Stenosis and AS:
Is it possible that AS can cause Spinal Stenosis, I am asking you folks about this because currently I am unemployed and I have yet been able to establish a relationship with a rheumatologist and I am not on social security disability yet so far but close to applying if the pain in my back does not clear up.
Also I would like to meet up with members in the Wichita, Ks area, so if you are here?
It would be nice to have discussions and your support in this matter. grin

Welcome Wingartist to the KA family. Sorry you have had to find us but you have come to the right place to find out about AS. Have popped a few links for you to have a look through - there are some 80,300 hits for just one search criteria, broaden the criteria and yet more links will come up. PubMed is good, Webmd, emed, and also the specialist journals. The ist is vast!

Am sure that others will be responding as they come on-line. We are an nternational bunch so there is invariably someone here any time of the day or night. Great if you can't sleep and want a bit of company.

Any questions, ask away - bound to be someone here who can help, who knows, has had to deal with and etc etc. BTW, there is a great search engine here, top right. Feel free to have a good ole moan, vent, share a joke or just pop in to say 'Hi'.

Good to meet you, look forward to meeting you some more.

My spine is pretty fairly crappy but not nearly as bad as others - couple of compression fractues, some fusing, DISH (Forestiere's disease), DDD, osteophytes, kypho/scholiosis, oedema in the bone marrow - inflammation. But doing OK.

Hope you find a good rheumatologist, that is crucial to dealing with the beast of many names - AS!

Take care -

Hi Wingartist, welcome to kickas. As you can see, Molly is our information highway, even though she's been sick this week she still can roll out the info, YOU GO MOLLY!
Anyways I'm sure you will get a lot more here as the day goes on. I have Spinal Stenosis and AS and Osteoarthritis. Still haven't figured out what is doing what in my spine and joints just glad I have a great group of docs to take care of it. That brings me to my point, please get yourself in with a good Rhuemy. I'm assumming you have a GP? The most important things in dealing with these issues is a good medical team. I have a GP, Rhuemy, Neurologist, Neurosurgeon, and 2 Orthopedic Surgeons, and a great PT staff when I need them. The point is they all work together like a well oiled machine so I don't have to worry about what is causing all this destruction anymore I just leave that up to them to take care of as long as they keep me comfortable. Another important this is knowledge which brings us back here to kickas. Learn...... the best patient is the informed one.
If you get a chance, hang around here and get to know this wonderful group and let us get to know a little more about you
Cindy

Hi!!!
Mollyc1i, Angelmom, Inanna and manatee.
Thank you for your input!

Inanna, I like the picture, you look as pretty as it!

Angelmom, that is beautiful country there, it has to be a boater and fisherman’s dream to live there!

Manatee, you can bet that I will get a GP to help me out as soon as I can find one that knows something about it.

And
Mollyc1i you are truly a wealth of info, thank you so much!

Hello Wingartist.

Nice to meet you. Stenosis is one of the things I accidentally found out about myself while reading my medical records. Mine is in my spinal canal and facet joints. There is a relationship between AS and Stenosis as Stenosis being a complication of the AS (probably over long term). I don't know much of the facts, but I think I can assume that the fusing in our spine can also effect the facet joints and spinal canal, as it appears to be happening with me.

Here is one article summary that shows AS fusion causing stenosis:
Quote:
at operation the stenosis appeared to be the result of extensive posterior soft tissue ossification. This heretofore unrecognized yet potentially treatable complication of ankylosing spondylitis is discussed. http://journals.lww.com/neurosurgery/Abs...ed_with.17.aspx

Here's an article showing arthritis'es and "other inflammatory conditions" as a cause of Stenosis:

Quote:
What Causes Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is generally caused by changes in the spine due to aging. Other causes of spinal stenosis include:

Arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis)
Calcium deposits on the spinal ligaments
Chronic inflammatory conditions
Inherited conditions, such as a small spinal canal or a curved spine
Injury
Paget's disease
Too much fluoride in the body
Tumors of the spine.

Take care,
James

Spinal Stenosis...my mom had that. She had difficulty when walking and keeping her balance. And she had problems controlling her hands. The progress of this deterioriation was stopped with a laminectomy to take the pressure off of her spine. Her problem area was somewhere were the crevical meets the thoracic.

Good one James - going to see if I can find more on that surgery lark. Sheesh was up most of the night, DISH is making it hard now to function very well, keep choking, an lying down is murder - makes it worse. Feels like a fist is in my throat...definitely summat gone radically wrong. Blast it. Dang AS. (Roll on rheumy appt...)

Lath: I have difficulty balancing on right leg. Wobble all over the place. Hopeless. Can balance not too bad on L. leg, but R? No way. The kyphosis/scholiosis is all down the R. side, so could well be connected, and the osteophytes of the cervicals are on the R. side also. (hossification...!! - gotta larf, innit?)
