If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

The relationship to AS I make is that the symptoms of AS and Reactive Arthritis (ReA) and their modes of action are strikingly similar and that people with ReA often have a single digit nail infection. Yes, of course its true that one can also have "normal, everyday" nail infections so not all of these would be related to AS.

My ortho doc told me that I could not wear Artificial nails after getting my hips done.I was told to remove them before having total hip replacement. I also take my own pedicure tools with me every month to get my toes done. I have heard of people getting great results with "Tea Tree OIL" you can get a small bottle of it at a health food store. It is a natural antibiotic . be well, Yoly

I have had one toe nail that has looked a little weird for a while, but I jammed that toe and thought that that had caused it look like it does. It, however, should be healed by now and it seems to disappear for a little bit and then come back. I wonder if it does have something to do with AS. Seeing how many of you have noticed the same thing, I would have to say that it is a good possibility that it does. sdg, Brad Edited by Thirday on 04/09/02 04:34 PM (server time).

Hi, just to keep the record straight, Tea Tree Oil is an anti-bacterial, not an anti-biotic. Makes it great for steaming when you have a cold in your lungs, amazing for any kind of surface infection, cold sores, canker sores, that kind of thing. I drink it in rosehip tea when I'm really sick - technically it hasn't been approved for internal use in Canada (although they've been taking it internally in Australia for ever), but small doses can't hurt and as with anything else, you need to be careful. Anyway, I'll shut up now. Kat

My dad had Psoriatic Arthritis, another one of the Spondyloarthropathies. He had nail infections quite often, but I can't remember if it was on a single digit at a time or not.

My understanding is that nail infections (ie: crumbly toe nails) are normally caused by fungus like Candida (though im sure there are other infectious causes also). You should be able to get a nail ointment / tincture from the chemist to help fix it up. It is normally in the chemist next to the other Tine / Candida / Athletes foot creams
Im reading into Candida right now .. so later I will post something in the Candida forum. Treatments, Drugs and Alternatives >> Alternatives >> Candida Albacans (looks like its spelt wrong to me ! )
Anyways, I will post a portion of my notes here:
** NOTES ** ######################################################################## *** Twin studies have shown that the immune system of AS sufferers is unable to mount an effective defense against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Candida albicans(7). - Candida should not be seen as the single cause for AS, but instead as one of many possible infectious causes. - Candida Albicans is not the only form of Candida infection, but seemingly the most common. There are many other varieties. * Candida takes a long time to clear and requires vigilance. Do not stop treatment after symptoms dissapear. You should continue treating the condition for at least 1-2 weeks to prevent re-infection. ** Candida loves humid conditions. Wear cotton as synthetic clothing tends to trap humidity. Wear thin material that can breathe. Thick soft material is no good. Try ironning you pants and shirt inside out every day. * AS and Arthritis sufferers often report more pain in cold / humid weather. And less pain in warm dry weather. Now consider what those weather conditions - combined with the types of clothing you wear at those times of the year. In cold weather we provide a perfect environment for candida, and add to that the effect of cold weather weakening our immune system.
Symptoms + Forms of Candida Infection ######################################################################## * Dandruff. This can in fact be caused by candida (not the only cause though) * crumbly / infected toe nail (often the little toe). There are other infections that can cause this as well. * ringworm (ringworm is a skin rash caused by a form of candida. ringworm has nothing to do with worms) * Athletes foot / Tinea * jock-itch (tinea of the groin)
## symptoms of a compromised / weakened immune system: - mouth ulcers / ulcers - chronic tiredness
