I just returned home from a trip-of-a-lifetime. A cruise of the Inside Passage of Alaska, followed by a land portion including Denali National Park and Fairbanks. Total of 12 days of travel. So very tired, but in awe of God's beautiful world. Traveled with my mom (age 77) and a friend (age 66), all in a balcony stateroom. Extended group of 26 people from a travel group my mom belongs to.

I took a shot of Simponi the morning I left, then started prednisone the next day, with blessings of rheumy. Had to take as high as 30mg/day to keep me going, but it was worth it to be able to abuse my body in so many ways. cool Everything from sedate walking/gawking/photo-taking/shopping to whale-watching/hiking/glacier-watching/train-riding to zip-lining. eek2 Today is first full day at home and I'm down to 20mg. Dropping 5mg/day on rheumy's orders and hope to be off this weekend. Back to work tomorrow. AND, I lost 2 pounds while I was gone!!!

Only bummer part--my mom had a cold early in the trip, which I caught. So far, it's not been bad, but I still have a little feeling of movement (like I'm still on the ship) and I got off last Saturday. Maybe ears are stopped up too much? If it's not better soon, may have to visit PCP. Now if I could just get used to the 3-hour time difference again. Traveling West is such a PITA.

I am so glad you had a nice time. It sounded like you had fun!!
I worked in Alaska for a summer and I thought it was really beautiful. It was weird how late the sun was out. I saw some guy mowing his lawn at 9pm, funny.
I loved how the ocean met the cliffs, that was my favorite place or scenary.

Hope coming off the steroids isnt too hardbfor you. I've been stuck at 7mg prednisone for awhile now, my knees swell up so much without the stuff. I keep hoping I can get off the steroids so I don't have some bad side effect.

Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Sed rate dropped from 65 to 19, but it took over a year.

That sounds so wonderful!

Glad you had the drugs to enable you to do what you wanted to do.

Be careful being sick and on pred. My GP wants me to get a s. pneumoniae and flu shot because i take methylpred a few times a year and hadn't realized i was more susceptible to germies while on pred. But i'm sure you already know all of this, considering your line of work and all.

I am so glad you got to make that trip. I am also happy for you that your dr. helped you.

My sister and her husband made that trip last year. They had planned it for years and they went and got back about a month before he died of pancreatic cancer. It was a trip of a lifetime for them.

Did you fly fish? My sister said the water was so cold but they had so much fun.

Take care of yourself with that cold. Get some rest.

Hugs.

Hi There,

Glad you had a great trip. We are sailing Dec 1st the Princess southern Caribbean. I asked my rheumy this week if I could try some steroids for my trip and he flatly said No way. I have had all the negative effects of steroids, so I understand why he won't do it. I am glad they worked for you and hopefully don't cuase permanent damage . I deveoped cataracts, diabetes, and neuropathy, so it is no more steroids for me.

Came home from work last night with a 100.5 degree temp. Went to PCP this morning and got rx for Augmentin for a sinus infection. Dizzy from ears and I guess I'll have to call in sick on my 2nd day back. I'm scheduled to work Saturday, so better to miss tonight (7 people working) than tomorrow when there are only 2 people working.

I haven't used steroids in over a year, so my rheumy was okay with it. I'll avoid pred now as much as I can.

Janet--hope your trip is wonderful. So far, I have no ill effects from the steroids because it's so infrequent that I use them. Hope you can control your disease a different way. I've never done steroids like this, but won't do it again unless it's an equally special occasion.

Joyce--we didn't fly fish, but I abused my body in numerous other ways while taking steroids. I've never seen such huge expanses of beautiful scenery as there were in Alaska.

Sue--I'm pretty sick now and it was likely worse earlier, but masked by the steroids. As the dose came down (10mg today), the symptoms got worse. My mom was sick the 2nd and 3rd days of the trip, but she got better quickly. I mistakenly thought I escaped the worst of it...<sigh>

Valsmom--This was like a long taper rather than a long-term dose. I took between 20 and 30mg/day till the last couple of days when we were heading home (no active sight-seeing/activities). This time of year had around 12 hrs of daylight in the southern part and somewhat less up around Fairbanks. We were just happy that the weather was so good.
