Hola !
I have a (naughty) question... wink
I am going to go on holiday and attend a wedding.
I have started NSD 6 weeks ago and getting good results.
Now I know some people react to alcohol, but I've been testing wine and I think I don't react badly to it if I don't overdo it.
So purely on the basis of starch presence/absence : are all alcoholic drinks safe to drink, ie is there any starch in wine, beer, champagne, rum, vodka ?
Not planning on getting off my head, but just would like to know what will be safe to drink at the wedding ?
And what about tonics, such as schweppes, do they contain starch?
Thanks !!
Marion

There are posts on the internet about potential benefits of certain wines against kelbsiella. Also some studies have been to show it like this one: http://www.decanter.com/news/wine-news/489303/white-wine-kills-e-coli

And you will find a few personal testimonials about people with AS feeling better after drinking chardonnay, due to the way it is produced, yeasts & acids involved, etc.

But you will also find some who say that wine flares up their AS.

For me, I enjoy a good night out once or twice a month, where I drink my wine! Or lately I have found I sleep much better when I drink cocktails. At a party the other night, I brought some vodka and grapefruits, and squeezed my own grapefruit juice vodka "greyhounds" over ice. It was delicious!

I also really enjoy ginger or basil infused vodka drinks. Some anti-inflammatory goodness mixed in there.

As always, just drink plenty of water, and a refreshing green smoothie in the morning.

I think most with AS will agree: just stay away from the beer! My husband and I make our own hard cider (from our own apple trees), cherry wine, and blueberry mead. And I do fine with all those also, but horrible with actual beer.

xoxo

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Beer itself is a 0 starch drink. I do not react to beer at all no matter the quantity. If it is starch free I can have it in any quantity and have 0 problems. Sugar and diary (which negatively impacts some with AS) doesn't give me problems. If sugar doesn't negatively effect you, then beer should be okay for you.

A lot of people react to beer, me included. There are several reasons/theories.

1. Alcohol contributes to leaky gut
2. Cross reactivity: yeast may trigger immune system that is previously compromised by a reactant
3. Gluten: present in beer and may trigger immune reaction

In short, I love beer but it does not love me!
