Secrecy shrouds the prescribing habits of doctors

http://www.propublica.org/article/part-d-prescriber-checkup-mainbar
Medicare Drug Program Fails to Monitor Prescribers, Putting Seniors and Disabled at Risk

(snippets)

"The data, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, makes public for the first time the prescribing practices and identities of doctors and other health-care providers. The information does not include patient names or the reasons why doctors prescribed particular drugs, so reporters interviewed the physicians to learn their rationales.

"ProPublica has created an online tool, Prescriber Checkup: http://projects.propublica.org/checkup/ to allow anyone to search for individual providers and see which drugs they prescribe.

"This information is just a start. It can’t tell you if your doctor is doing something wrong, but it can give information that allows you to ask important questions: http://www.propublica.org/article/prescriber-checkup-faq

"For instance, why is your doctor choosing a drug that his peers seldom do? Does your doctor favor expensive brand-name drugs when cheaper generics are available? Has your doctor been paid to give promotional talks for drug makers?

"And we’d like to see the day when all prescribing by all health professionals – not just in Medicare – is a matter of public record."

Molly,

I clicked on the first link and there was an article next to it about Female physicians suicides being high. Also female suicides being almost as common breast cancer; that was a surprise to me.
sad

Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Sed rate dropped from 65 to 19, but it took over a year.

Yes - I saw that. Very sad. There has been some slight media coverage here on the plight of female physicians, family commitments and the sheer exhaustion involved. See if I can find the article.

Here's summat to enlighten -

Are female GPs really treated as second-class citizens?Subscription

Comment | 21 October 2009
General practice is rife with discrimination against women, if a new Government report is to be believed. Allegations that female GPs are deprived of contractual rights, are denied maternity support and miss out on leadership roles have prompted calls for a ‘step change’ in attitudes. But what do GPs think of the report and will its recommendations bring improvements?

(Quite an eye opener).

What an awesome link. Looked up rheumy right off the bat. #1 rx was MTX. Not a big surprise.

Need to do some research on my various docs. grin All this information could be very interesting once I get used to how it's presented here. Thanks, Molly!!! clap

Seeing the drugs that the rheumies around here prescribe the most, makes me really see how many more RA patients there are. Is that because RA is a lot more common? or because RA is easier to recognize and so doctors are more willing to treat it? Those are rhetorical questions.
