Hi folks. I'm kind of new to this site. I read with great interest all your NSD stories. I have started the NSD myself; so far no change. I have a couple questions: 1) For those of you who test foods with iodine, what does it mean for you when the iodine turns brown? Not its original amber color, but not black either. Do you eat those foods or not, and if you do how do they affect you? 2) For those with starchy medications, do you find they affect you adversely? I ask because my inflammation is as bad as ever, but the only known source of starch to me is some medications (pro-biotic, sleep aid, adrenal support). What alternatives has anyone found?

Hi Dreamer,

With iodine:
- Amylopectin starch turns brown
- Amylose starch turns black

Amylose starch
.. this is the main thing that we react to.

Amylopectin
.. is a bit of a curiosity at the moment - I was able to eat it without reaction, but I still reacted strongly to amylose. Things have changed recently for me and at the moment I'm not even reacting to Amylose. Now when I say reacting I just mean AS inflammation. With amylopectin I do have an issue of getting proctitis (and now I wonder about prostatitis). The most common source of amylopectin is sticky rice. Some spices seem to have amylopectin too?

>> my inflammation is as bad as ever, but the only known source of starch to me
>> is some medications (pro-biotic, sleep aid, adrenal support).

Have you tested each of these with iodine? As for probiotics, I must warn against any probiotic that contains Inulin or FOS (fructo-oligosacharides), in the past I found that the processed forms of these caused very strong inflammation.

Hello there Dreamer,

Welcome to Kickas... where in Arizona do you live? I lived in Chandler for 4 years and worked in Tempe. Got to know some very nice people living in that area that had AS through group that we had.

For probiotic, will want one that does not have FOS... there are some out there in States that I took without issue like Natrens Healthy Trinity.

What foods are you eating.. list them so we can review them. I only did iodine test a few times.. I have been on diet for 12+ years now... I am fairly certain what I can/cannot eat now.

I cannot answer iodine question 100%.. but if turns brown slowly.. may indicate small amounts of starch. Probably gets a bit darker with time.

Tim

When I started I stayed away from anything that changed color at all. Probiotics are a tough one. Natren trinity is the only one I found that worked for me. I went very strict for the first year.

Hi Zark. Yes, I test just about everything with starch. The problem meds that I mentioned are those I tested with iodine and it turned black. There are others (vitamins) that just go brown. Thanks for the info on problem ingredients for probiotics. I will check mine ASAP. What probiotic do you use (or did use) without trouble?

Hi Dotsyle. Right now I live in Buckeye. I lived in Tempe for a time, then Mesa, then when I met my wife I moved to her house in Buckeye. I still work for Tempe- long drive!

Here's what I mainly eat: turkey, chicken, salame (w/o dairy), almonds and almond products like milk, butter; coconut products like milk, cream, flour; walnuts, brazil nuts, macademias, flax crackers, kale, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, mustard, stevia, avocado. These are mostly foods that have tested completely negative for starch.

As of a couple weeks ago I was also eating: blueberries, blackberries, fresh tomatos, peppers, honey. But now I've given these up since some of them showed a little starch, and others have sugar, which I've decided to eliminate as well. (BTW, if anyone knows a good salsa recipe which truly has no starch but is still tasty, please do share. I've found that just about all peppers and tomatoes have at least a little starch. I love spicy food and having to avoid salsa and sauces sucks.)

At this point I'm having to do the same, stay away from anything with any color change. At the moment the only color-changers are those medications. Maybe I'm so sensitive even those minute amounts get me.

Where were your pictures taken?

I just saw that Natren's has sunflower oil, wouldn't that make it starchy?

Almonds avocados tomatoes were all off limits for me. I was also taking a guaifenesin tablet for my sinuses it was all starch went black immediately . My vitamins were starchy also. Nuts of any kind were off limits. I lived on salad, eggs chicken and fresh fish. Raisins were ok and I ate them in moderation. No ketchup anymore, at this point I can't stand the taste of it. Now I have found I can eat tomatoes, blanched almonds and some avocado. I also could not eat any dairy. I lost a lot of weight and felt like I had no energy. After about three months I started feeling better my energy came back.
It was not an easy road but worth it. My latest win has been that I can eat sticky rice once in a while with no issues. Good luck and stay tough.
