Hi friends. I'm looking for some info, if anyone has any experience with this. I had an endoscopy(looking at the esophagus and stomach with a camera)July 31st. Just found out today I have a hyperplastic polyp. It's bleeding and causing iron deficiency anemia. The gastro is speaking of pulling me off Celebrex and perhaps Humira. Not good. Has anyone else ever had a bleeding stomach polyp? He tried to remove it, but he said I wasn't doing well under anesthesia. They did a general for it. I've had quite a few endoscopys to balloon my esophagus, that were not done under a general anesthesia. This particular one was looking for bleeding. Sorry, I ramble.. But has anyone else ever had a bleeding stomach polyp, and how was it treated? Thanks.

Hi Nonnie,

Had polyps in stomach, had them removed. (They were not bleeding). Then short time later had anterior bladder repair, hysterectomy. Dr. said he got all the polyps at that time - that was 10 years ago. Drs haven't yet figured out why I am still having trace bleeding. My new dr now is checking into it further - my iron is also very low normal. As far as I know the bleeding is not coming from any polyps. Hoping you get answers soon - Hugs Gerri - Service Dogs Makaylah (Standard Poodle) and Shiloh (tiny toy poodle) send kisses.

Hi Nonnie- Sorry to hear about your polyp and your issue with anemia. My Gastro encouraged me to go on a biologic because I have stomach ulcers that are contributing to my anemia. I had an iron infusion which bumped up my iron storage and stopped NSAIDs and Methotrexate. I still have an issue with anemia but I just put up with it. I would much rather deal with anemia than severe pain. Hope this helps.

thanks Shari and Gerri.

Shari, the reason I'm in circles about it, is that this type of stomach polyp is a type that can cause cancer, especially when it gets to a certain size. I don't know the size yet, waiting on the docs call. It's bleeding and that is a characteristic of a large one. It's also located near where the stomach and esophagus meet. I'm beginning to think I want it removed, but have no idea yet what problems i was having under anesthesia. I thought I did fine, I don't remember a thing! haha! I've been on iron 2/3 times a day for 2.5 months now. It's hard on my digestive system too. Will your ulcer eventually stop bleeding? Sorry for all the questions, but do you have to take iron tablets in addition to the infusion?

I would want it out asap. I have had no stomach polyps although once I had a prelim dx of cancer of the stomach from an endoscopy. I had wall to wall ulceration. I now take two somac everyday. I have had 10 colonoscopies over the past fifteen years . Over half have revealed polyps. The first one I was too late and finished up with colon cancer into 6 lymph nodes. Since then they have been early stage though even at an early stage some have biopsied as having displaysia. (pre cancerous changes) So ,yes I would want it out. RON.

Geez Ron, that's pretty rough. I hope you're cancer free now. But keeping an eye on it.

Update- I did get to talk to my doctor a few hours ago. He said it wasnt' that large at this time, and that he plans on looking at it again in 5 months. He said while I was under anesthesia, I was very active, he said like a "restless body syndrome". He said they could put me into a deeper plain of sleep. He's also making me an appointment with a blood specialist so I can do the iron infusions instead of the iron pills. I used to have a specialist, but she has relocated. Also he said the Humira won't be a problem, and if I need the Celebrex for my AS and other arthritis, we can watch it and see how it's doing for now. No regular anti inflammatories or aspirin products.

HI,

what did they use as the "anesthesia"? Was it just the usual sedation drugs or real anesthesia? I've had a problem with neither, but can't do the sedation drugs because they'd interact with my LDN, so they did the propofol and that worked well for me.

no stomach polyps here, but gastritis til I did away with dairy (highly allergic / sensitive to the casein) and especially since the Humira. Ulcers and stomach cancer ran in my family until the invention of Prilosec. I still take that every day.

My mom developed an ulcer on celebrex. I developed gastritis on the vioxx (when it was on the market)…though the cox2 inhibitors are 100 times more effective on blocking the cox2 enzyme (that produces the inflammatory response) than the cox1 enzyme (in the stomach, etc), it still inhibits the cox1 enzyme to a point and so can cause stomach inflammation, ulcers, etc. If I were you and you can do without the celebrex, that's what I'd consider doing. Also if not on prilosec or nexium, something to consider maybe? ask the gastroenterologist? Though I know a lot of people have concerns for these drugs, but the prilosec has helped both my husband and myself immensely.

Of course a stomach polyp may be quite different from gastritis --> ulcers --> stomach cancer, which is what my family deals with. so the treatment may be quite different.

sounds like you have a good doctor though.
