Very well put Leona......

That is very true what you said. So many Fibro patients dont get the care they deserve as they tend to dismiss any other problems one might have at that point after the dx. It's unfair as other serious issues can arise.

I for one do not have the incontinence problem, but I do have the intestinal problems many of the AS folks have. I started out with the H.Pylori bacteria, and gallstones, then gallbladder removal in my 2nd trimester of my pregnancy, and by about 8 weeks postpartum I started developing serious problems with stiffness and unable to roll over off the bed. I could not get to my baby without my hubby rolling me over to help me get moving. Fortunately he would do most of the bottle runs, and now he doesnt work graveyard and it helps me when my toddler awakens at night. I can hardly move her at all without fear of injuring myslef. I also suffer from unspecified colitis ===unspecified??? I would say specifically "painful colitis"... , and IBS, and gastritis. Most of these I have controlled through the NSD and it has helped me a great deal.

My GP thinks along the line as your doctor. He always is open to listening to any new issues arising. He never dismisses me. He's the one that gave me the most information than all of my docs put together. My old Rheumy dx me with Spondloropathy, LBPain, and Mysofascial pain...and TMJ, costochondritis. He knows where to find my pain. He knew it was real. I stopped visitng him b/c he was so overbooked and had little time for me on the last visit. But we had a chat on the phone about this and hope that my next visit will be a little more productive.

Cognitive impairment?? What does that mean Leona???

take care....

Hi Angie,
Cognitive impairment can be memory loss (usually short term), inability to concentrate, difficulty thinking straight, difficulty learning new things....and the list goes on. Math is especially difficult if you have this problem. I can remember years ago like it was yesterday, but five minutes ago, I have trouble with.

I'm afraid some morning I'm going to wake up next to my husband and not know who he is...lol I have forgotten my children's names, gotten lost two houses away from mine, been unable to find my street in my own neighborhood....and have gone into a room knowing I need more light and not being able to figure out how to get it. That is just a few examples. I have learned to laugh at myself, but it was an uphill battle.

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble lately Angie, I will keep you in my prayers.

Leona,
Oh yes, cognitive impairments!!!!! Many people that are in pain may exhibit cognitive impairment type problems although a head injury is not present.
I have been a cognitive / vocational therapist in a head injury clinic for the past 5 1/2 years. Sometimes, I feel like I need to be my own patient.

When I ruptured the L/4-L/5 and had two other lumbar discs bulging cauda equina syndrome was a real worry, but fortunately I dodged that bullet. According to my rheumy the nerves in some part (I've forgotten exactly which part) of the lumbar spine control bowel and bladder control and if they are pinched due to stenosis or a rupture, cauda equina can be the result. I lost the use of my right leg for a few weeks, the phantom limb, hurt like h#@@ but when I tried to stand on it it was like I had no leg at all! Got around by using a crutch, wheelchair when available or little scooter in the supermarket. Thankfully it healed and I could walk again. Do you have areas of stenosis in your lumbar spinal area? I have a lot of mechanical damage to my spine due to years of untreated (undiagnosed!) inflammation.

Have you ever had an MRI to see if some of your problems are because of stenosis or other damage to your spine?

Boy this really ticks me off. I just dont understand doctors, I think most pull a diagnosis out of their AS.

Where do you find these doctors? All the ones I see seem ready and willing to say, "I don't know." Sometimes I think I'd prefer the dartboard/Magic 8 ball method. I think too that fibromyalgia is used as a catch-all for "female who hurts for no apparent reason". When it came up in my case, I said "I don't hurt THAT much, and not in the right places!" He hasn't mentioned it again. --Jeri

Did you know that a rare symptom of AS is cauda equina syndrome which causes bladder and bowel incontinence? I've mentioned that before on the board but received no replies so I assume no one has that problem, or doesn't want to talk about it if they do.

Well, technically, it wouldn't be a "symptom", but a "complication", as it is caused by compression of the nerve roots...people with disc herniations caused by anything can have it. You don't need AS--just a screwed up lumbar spine! --Jeri (an English major who works in the medical field)

Hey Bug!!!

I'm home on a Saturday night, because my back is out of wack....

Man, doctors need to start dealing with pain...that is, the normal docs who only subscribe to the drug company feeding grounds...but don't listen to patients PAIN...

Controling pain means quality of life....but we must not mask the pain with drugs that can cause serious side effects!!! Just my opinion!!

Hang in there.......

Peace

Jeri,
I apologize for wording that wrong, but one of my cognitive impairment difficulties in trying to find the right word. I sat here for about five minutes trying to grab the word I meant.....and finally settled on symptom.

I also know it is caused by other things....I was already checked by CT scan for lumbar stenosis....the doctors have been trying to find a reason for the incontinence for almost 2
years.

Thanks for your input..
