Okay, my diet starts tomorrow. I am going to try the NSD but I ablosutely LOVE pasta so it may end up being LSD. I'm going to try to be strong. I have a few quick questions before I start. I am going grocery shopping today so I have printed off the responses to my post about sample menus and another post (I think it was dougs) about grocery list.
Now to my questions...

Is sugar bad or okay?

Can I still drink Coke and sweet tea?

If a product has starch in it will it say so on the label?

Are most vegies okay? I already know what fruits are okay.

I like to fix hams, like a canned ham and put pineapples on top and mix brown sugar with the pineapple juice and pour over the top and bake. Is that okay?

My 5th wedding anniversary is this Friday and we are going out to eat on Saturday, what is okay to have? I was thinking maybe a steak and salad but they usually ask about baked potatoes or french fries, what do I tell them?

Several people have mentioned fasting, I would like to try this but how do I keep my energy up? Sometimes I don't eat breakfast or lunch but by the time supper time gets here I feel weak and like I'm going to pass out. I have 3 kids, I HAVE to have energy!

I think that's all for now. Thanks everyone for being patient with me. I'm going to give this a good try.

I thought of a few more...

Is any meat okay? Ham, chicken, turkey, fish, bologna, steak, pork chops, bacon, sausage, etc.?

Are there any certain cooking spices I should stay away from?

What about ketchup, mustard, tarter sauce, bbq sauce?

How about instant pancake mix and pancake syrup?

Why do some say to buy DARK green leaf lettuces? Does the light have starch?

Thanks,

Amanda

okay, I've put together the info I have collected into a simple, easy to read document. Please look at the attachment and let me know if there are any mistakes. If it is okay I will print it off and put it on the fridge. Thanks!

This is what I was trying to attach:

Things to avoid: all breads, pastas, potatoes, rice, corn, oats, peas, most beans, over cooked veggies (raw is best), bananas, any products containing: white flour, modified food starch, corn starch, wheat starch, and anything else with the word starch in it.

Drinks: water, milk, juice (preferrable welches concord grape juice), some soda, beer, wine

Snacks: fruit, ice cream, cheese stick, chocolate in moderation, slim jim, dried fruits, (except banana chips), nuts (except for peanuts or cashews), sugar free jello, dill pickles, yogurt (check label for starch), cottage cheese, aplesauce, uncooked veggies, sunflower seeds, cucumbers strawberries or celery with cottage cheese and paprika, onion dip

Fruit: apples, pears, cherries, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, lemons, honeydew, pineapple, grapefruit, apricots, peaches, blueberries, grapes, oranges, plums, raspberries

Veggies: cucumbers, green lettuce, red lettuce, green peppers, onion, green onion, tomatoes, celery, carrots, artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, limited green beans, bean sprouts, spinach, kale, raddishes, beets, cauliflower, zuchini, squash, mushrooms

Meat: tuna chicken, steak, pork chops, ham, bologna, bacon, sausage, turkey, hamburger, fish, lamb, deer

Dairy: milk, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, butter, yogurt, etc

Does all of this sound right? If something is wrong let me know. I want to also put what kinds of sauces I can have (ex mustard ketchup bbq). Don't forget to answer the questions in my other posts. I can't believe I am the only person posting here. Hopefully someone will be of some assistance soon. Thanks

I've gone to the store and read ALOT of lables, I never realized there were so many kinds of flour. My new question is...do I stay away from white flour only or all others also? Enriched flour, soy flour, wheat flour are some that I saw today. And what about cornstarch, I suspose that is starch to stay away from. Reading what all NSDers eat sounded okay until I went to the store. Even my bbq sauce has starch in it. How can a person eat meat w/ no sauce? I guess that's two questions. Thanks everyone

Hi Amanda,

Answers to questions I can help with:

1. Most meats are OK. Sausage you have to watch and read label closely.... I have problems with most but have found a few I could handle. I eat fish, chicken, turkey and steak/beef without any problems. Have not had pork chops, bacon or ham on the NSD so can not answer.

2. What types of spices are you looking to use? I still use basil, black pepper and ginger (not really a spice) I would not think they are a problem

3. Gottschall's book states to stay away from Ketchup because it is 40% sugar, but if you can handle sugar should be no problem. States mustard is OK... but get plain, gourmet types have added ingredients that tend to be starchy.

I use Worchestshire Sause on beef/chicken (tad amount of starch I believe, but I can handle) and Salsa (excellent on burgers)

4. Pancakes are out big time

5. Typically the darker the green, the more healthy the veggie is for you. Brocolli, kale, asparagus etc.... have more nutrients than iceberg lettuce. However, green cabbage is good for the intestines and celery is good for calcium.

Veggies with starch - corn, beans, some peas.

Take care,

Tim

List looks fairly good. Couple comments:

Some people have issues with dairy as well (milk, ice cream, yogurt, cheese etc....). I can handle but chose only to partake of cheese in this group.

Have to watch the type of beer. I do not drink, but there are quite a few in this forum that do so they can answer better.

I believe someone was making the sugar free jello from scratch. Will have to read labels closely on this one if you buy store brands.

Best way to learn is to experiment yourself and see how your body responds.

Hi Amanda,

You seem to be well organised - this is probably the biggest hurdle to overcome with the NSD/LSD. A few points:

- with regards to sausage, a lot of sausage is prepared with flour before they put it in the skin. Any meats that are "natural" i.e. steak, chops etc, are OK. Mince you will have to look on the label but most I think is just 100% minced meat.

- re. eating out its a good idea to always contact the restaurant or a friend (if eating over) to make sure you can eat a proper meal. Don't worry about being a bit difficult - it is a bit uncomfortable at first to be doing this but you will get used to it - the goal is to get better and if you explain that this is because of a medical condition most people are quite OK.

- dairy can be a major prob. with some people. I would look at only eating mature cheeses and substituting soy milk for cows milk for the first month or so. I think its a shame if people are so committed to the NSD only to find out after a long time that they should have cut dairy also. You can always reintroduce it.

- you didn't seem to mention eggs. They are a great breakfast thing for omlettes, etc.

- as a help, you should also try to plan out what meals you will prepare, eg breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks.

Good luck!

Hey Amanda,
Hope everything goes well. I don't have a lot to add. Just try as much as you are able to eat foods that are as natural as possible. FRESH fruits, BIG salads (as was said the darker green ones have more GOOD stuff! Iceburg is mostly water with no nutrients.), and meat. I know this sounds hard but YOU have to figure out what you can eat. I know you told me you don't like grape juice but believe me it saves me many cravings. Your taste buds will change and adapt to your new way of life. The goal is not just starch elimination but HEALTHY eating.
JUMP IN!! You can do it and you will feel better!
Janet
