proper use of a cane is putting the cane on the opposite side of the more injured/painful leg/hip. You match the stride of the cane with your 'bad' leg to support it the best. My physical therapist said most people use their cane wrong because they use according to what hand they want to use instead of which leg to support the best way.

It can be ackward at first if you have to use your dominant hand, but you soon learn to adjust and sometimes have to shuffle things around as you shop or whatever it is you are doing.
