The vehicle code in CA mentions that Handicapped people don't need to pay for parking in public parking structues. I am a full time student in CA and I am continuously getting ticketed by the police who do not honor this law. I am considering an attorney, especially since my dad is having the same trouble at the college he is going to. Anybody in California had similar problems?

I am from Florida and had trouble with this in the past. A few years ago we had to pay $15 per sticker. And then I'd use the sticker in a meter zone and get a ticket anyway. But you don't have to pay the fine. Just write a note with your sticker number and it is dismissed.

Then the state was sued for charging for the stickers. Now the first sticker is free and an additional sticker is $1. And I don't get ticketed anymore. Shame on them for making handicapped people pay. The state said it was because they have so many handicapped with the elderly.........but that is no excuse!

How do you get a wheelchair sticker. I have often thought about this. I don't need one all the time but on my bad days, I wish so badly I could park in a wheelchair space.

Hi

In missouri my husband went to the DMV and got the Form for Handicapped Parking Plack and took it to the Dr then the Dr has to Fill it out then ya have to take it back to the DMV and they then will issue you a plack or a License plate, we like the plack cause we can use it in any car were in. Oh there is also differnt kinds temporary (for differnt time periods 1,2 or 3 mths I think) or permenent. Here ours only last 1 year and the DMV sends out a renew notice and we go there pay $2 and get a new one. There hoping to soon lengthin the time for permenent placks. I would sudjest talking to your Dr first about getting one since its such a process if there cool with it then ya can have the paper work ready for your next appt. Well if thats how it works in your state. Some Drs may have the paper work there already. Maybe.

Hope this helps

Take Care
Cindy

Is there an appeals process? We have that here in Minnesota and when I received a ticket I had to mail a copy of my certificate with the ticket and it was excused. I realize that would get annoying if you had to do it many times over. Do you have a disability-rights advocacy group that could take the issue on? That would be cheaper than a lawyer. I would call the mayor's office and complain.
The nice thing about the perking permit is that it is recognized in all states. I took mine to Hawaii, got ticketed and appealed. It was excused.

Hi Simone,
I have a handicap placard and all I do is put it in my window when parking in handicap parking.
All you have to do is go to the DMV and pick up a form. The form will have an area for you to fill out and sign and for your doctor to fill out and sign.
Then it's sent in to the DMV and after they approve it they will send you a placard. They are free and it only cost if I lose one.
People are so rude sometimes. Sometimes when I pull up to a handicap parking spot, even before I have time to put the placard up..people sometimes give me ugly looks or say things like " this is handicap, you can't park here" Then I put my placard in the window and they feel stupid.
They automatically assume that you have to be old or have some huge, noticable handicap to be disabled.
Now that I have my van they don't do it as much.
Just be prepared tp get the looks and ugly words if you get one.
Hugs,
Lisa
