Hi Jayne,.... I've had this many many times.

I've had this happen all my life ~ and long before my AS too! I was probably so young when it started to really remember the 1st time and being scared (I'm sure I was) tho it always catches me off guard and is an unpleasant and freaky feeling. For me it happens a few times every year.

I don't remember ever mentioning it to my doc (or anyone for that matter), as I always thought it was something everyone experiences occassionally ... limbs going to sleep. Like sitting cross-legged as a kid does for too long you can make it happen below the knee. I don't think about it and don't worry about it either. I've just assumed that somehow when I sleep I get in a weird position that cuts off circulation and will wake me up. I just use my good arm to move the rubber one around until sensation returns. Luckily, it always does!

If it turns out that I was suppose to be worrying about this all these years ... well then I'll really feel dumb.

Maggie, I imagine having this happen while sitting awake would be a whole different story and I'm glad you're having it checked into. Please let us know how it goes and I wish you the best!

Take care!

IMHO you should get referred to a neurologist. The technology available now is really remarkable (a HUGE difference from when I was dx'ed with MS 15 years ago!) - the nerve damage from my C-spine was obvious immediately, with just a quick electrical-impulse test (my rheumy actually has one attached to his lap top - put a loop of wire around my thumb, how I got sent to neuro so quickly). If it's nothing dangerous, then they'll be able to tell, and you've lost nothing but time. If it is a disc or a spur pressing on the nerve, then you need to get it sorted. Not to be an alarmist, but I was on the verge of permanently losing the ability to lose my right arm. Better safe than sorry.

Hey sweetie, I don't get this when I sleep, but man, when I stand up sometimes I have no leg!! I'm walking around on one sided nothing for a few minutes until I start to feel it again. Wierd thing is that I don't get pins and needles as it returns to the land of the living. I mentioned it to my rheumy. "Sitting in one position too long" was his answer. Well DUH!!

Hope you get this sorted out soon, for your own peace of mind if nothing else.

Many hugs,

Kat

I get this once in a while, but the last two fingers of both hands (pinkies and rings) tend to do this rather than the WHOLE hand. However if I'm sitting in a weird position my feet will do this too. Then I get a rush of pins and needles and then my sensation returns to normal again.

I have no nerve damage in my spine so I often wonder if it's compression of nerves **within the joints** causing this. But I'm not diagnosed with anyhting so my story doesn't count.

Hey Rox,
Last two fingers = ulnar nerve. Many people have trouble with impingement, inflammation, etc, with the ulnar nerve in the elbow area. You can quite effectively put those last two fingers into a nice slumber by leaning on your elbow (on the hard desk) to hold your head up during a long class!

Freaky indeed!
Frightening indeed Simone!
I had that happen to me first about 4 years ago. I awoke and my arm swang around like crazy. I literally screamed b/c I had NO control over it. Art came rushing over and after about 5 minutes it slowly came back around..the feeling. It was terrible!

Since then it's happend a few times. I dont know if it was from the herniated and bulging discs in my back or my neck causing it. During that time I had some very un-nerving [no pun intended] pain on my scalp. I was so frightened b/c it felt like little shocks on my scalp. I though my God ..either a nervous breakdown..or who knows! lol What's worse is when I had my brain mri two years ago...then my neurologist at the time thought my dark spots were mini strokes b/c it was not normal to have these on a 33 yr old female.

I wish I had an answer for you. I'm assuming AS is the culprit. During that period I was starting to have more and more mini flares that I thought were spasms from a bad back. A bad back that I had never actually injured. I never had an inklin' it could be arthritis creeping up on me.

I do hope it goes away soon. I have had to learn to rotate often in bed so that the circulation doesnt scare the bajeebies out of me. My grandpa has what I believe is vasculitis so I am always a bit nervous about the possibility. Take care and let your doc know just in case....

hugs]]]

Thanks so much everyone for all your replies. I have been really busy, so I apologize that I can't thank you all personally. I feel a little better, knowing this has happened to many of you. I should be speaking with my doc. sometime this week about my daughter so I will tell her then.

Thanks to a
Great bunch of friends!!!!!!!!

Simone
