I have as of last thursday I have given up nsaids and I will never again take them. After 1 year my guts have lost thier mind. I now have lovely syptoms of IBS and burp like a beer drinker. I have cut wheat out of my diet and got a b12 shot, (the shot temporarly which made me feel like my old self). My plan is to try some "natural" substances, change my diet, shoot myself up weekly with b12 and exercise (as soon as my guts allow).

What I need from you great wise people is besides from wheat, what are the worst starch culprits? I cannot go cold turkey on starch, but I am very good at weaning myself of things. I thought if I started with the biggies first it would help.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Laneblue,

Took this from John's post maybe as a starting point for you.....

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Essentially, it means REDUCE BREAD, POTATOES, CAKES and PASTA and INCREASE the intake of MEAT, FISH, FRUITS and VEGETABLES.

REDUCE THE FOLLOWING

Bread and flour products:
Bread (white, brown, wholemeal, etc.) in very limited amounts.
Crispbreads, biscuits, cream crakers, twiglets.
Cakes, puddings and pies.
Pastas, spaghetti, noodles, macaronis, pizzas, chappati, pitta bread, popcorn.

Rice
Brown, white, boiled, fried or in puddings.
Potatoes
Chips, baked, boiled, roasted or mashed potatoes, and potato crisps to be avoided.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

May be more difficult to see results the more starch you keep in your diet. I personally do not see much benefit unless I eat only brown rice for starch and yogurt for dairy (I have issues with dairy as well). When I limit myself to these, I do pretty good.

Not sure if you want to approach by eliminating snacks and 1-2 meals of starch and keep one starchy meal or slowly eliminate types of starch. Personally I think the latter would work better.... reduce the worst offenders which I believe are breads, potatoes, cakes and pasta for starchy foods. Also anything fried.... Maybe you will see some results with this, not sure I would personally.

Best of luck with the diet.

Laneblue if you are forced to go cold turkey on meds, it would apppear not much harder to go cold turkey on starch - it was for me and i took one tablet every ten days or so for quite a while. Hope you can do it as i see the effects periodically. I have lived close to a chronic belcher for years - my father has had IBS/D for many many years and has a carbohydrate addiction. He belches MUCH less when he reduces his milk and dairy, but he has never given his full support to his own abstentions. At 87 now, what the hell. His mother kept a goat for him when he was young as he was intolerant to bovine dairy - probably to the casein like me......

So after the main four poisons, i'd ditch dairy for a while and not even look at yoghurt - it's the worst for me.
Good luck!

Well wheat is certainly the biggy, if you can survive without all the products of that you are 90% to success; the next one to stop is potato, fries to begin with.

best wishes for improvements

A friend of mine lived on chips; I have known him to have them for breakfast, and being a bloody minded tike insisted on cooking them in lard. Buried last week aged 61. What with the fags (cigarettes!) quite impressive really.

Dairy is the biggest problem for me. I had been completely off both dairy and starch for 5 months and tried experimenting a little. Even the smallest amount of dairy stiffens me up immediately, but found that I can tolerate starch in small doses without any problems. Giving up my Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia has been a big sacrifice, but whenever I get a craving, I think of how I'll feel for the next couple of days and I've been able to resist. What I would give to be able to eat one pint without pain!

I agree, cow dairy is a problem for me as well. Ice cream is a killer. Lately I have been experimenting with goat cheese and milk and do not seem to suffer from it like cow dairy.Goat dairy is supposed to be easier to digest than cow.Everyone is different so I guess you just have to experiment and see what happens.

Mimi if you react so badly to dairy then i suppose you are looking out for the milk powder used in so many products nowadays - it continually pops up. Milk chocolate is no loss, dark chocolate is much better........
In my intitial stages dairy affected me little, but it became more significant after six months LSD and a few fasts. Have little need for dairy now, but have an occasional soy yoghurt - soy milk is too starchy.
Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia sounds like something for a "Dead" head.

Deb, goats milk may be better (not sure of any casein issues there), but goat milk yoghurt tends to be thickened with corn starch or similar in the west... in Northern Africa it is to die for (not literally) and is more cheese like...

Hi Ted,

I just bought some goat milk yogurt last week but didn't look at the ingredients carefully until I got home. Yes it was thickened with tapioca starch so I haven't touched it. Too bad! I was so looking forward to eating something new.
