The swelling gets worse at night - - well, actually as the day wears on - - because we are on our feet during the day. Try putting them up on something whenever you can, preferably higher than your head, it will drain some fluid upwards. The tingling could be unrelated. My numbness and tingling in my feet/legs is due to nerve damage caused by bulging discs and stenosis in my lumbar spine.

You have my permission to send the jerk my response about the fused foot

Maxine, I ran into this about a year ago when my uric acid tested high. The only symptons that I had was some tingling in my toes, which I thought was due to a.s. I had the same questions that you do -- I eat very little red meet, some shrimp, but not a lot, and once in a blue moon, maybe a couple of sips of beer. My doctor told me that gout is a hereditary disease, so in all probability, it's something that I inherited (just like AS!). He put me on Allopurinol and ever since, my urid acid has been normal & there's been no more tingling in the tootsies.

As someone replied earlier, have them check your blood tests, if you test high for uric acid, then it's probably gout.

I've had AS in both my feet since 2000. Woke up one morning and my feet were swollen and red (I'm sure if you search the archives you will find the post from the actual hour I woke up with it!). could barely walk on them for a while but AS diagnosis followed via my other symptoms but unfortunately the foot pain is still enough to stop me walking properly.

My diagnosis is "Ankylosing Spondylitis with peripheral joint involvement" and was told that AS has been seen in the extremeties such as toes and fingers and also feet and hands - to say he has never seen AS in feet just seems to me that its probably a case of he's never seen it physically and he has not researched the condition enough himself anyway, though i might be a little unfair to him.

I had steroid injections in my feet which helped for a little while, hope yours goes soon, but if they diagnose it as gout and it turns out to be an AS sympton, I just hope you get the correct treatment for it.

I woke up one morning (I always seem to "wake up" with things!!! Somtimes I wish I hadnt gone to bed at all) with a swollen knee, it was hot as hell, Doc said to me "Wow, that is a hot knee - has anyone in your family ever suffered from gout?" to which I responded no! I was sent to Accident & emergency for x rays and the Docs were baffled. Still dont know to this day what it was, though I do read of other ASers just waking up one day and finding various joints in a state of swelling. Its a strange illness we have, certainly a buy one illness get another 20 free sort of thing.

Good luck

Daz

Boy am I glad I decided to drop in!! All the docs I went to are baffled!!
For almost two months I have been battling an extremely swollen left foot, exactly where you said-across the top of the foot, down the outer edge and around the ankle. Not only can't I wear enclosed shoes without "puffing out" around the edges, I can no longer wear socks because of the added swelling. I went thru an episode of swelling all the way up to my knee about 1 month ago and was concerned it might be a blood clot. After 4 xrays and a DVT study they ruled this out and said "don't know"....
Now I know! I didn't realize either that it could be the AS...makes sense of course. Anybody getting treatment for it? What works? Ice and elevation don't do squat. I already take Enbrel and use Duragesic patch and Ultram for pain control (for other regions of AS). So glad you folks are here.

Hello Maxine,
I had gout in my left foot and like you, it only was on the left ridge, little toe area. My doc told me that it is most common to get it in the big toe but that doesn't always happen. I only had gout once and I thought I broke my foot somehow. I couldn't put any weight on it. It sure made taking a shower a pain in the [####]. Anyways. my doc told me that eating smoked foods such as sardines, salman, and ham will contribute to getting gout, and that drinking lots of water will help the gout go away. Along with Aleve and lots of water, I havn't had any more problems with it. When my doc told me about the smoked foods, I was like Ahhhhh man! that really sucks. But it made sense becasue before the attack, I've been eating alot of those Kipered snacks. I love them but I cut them out of my diet and I have had no more attacks. I hope this will help you some. Take care...

Daz, It's going to sound awful when I say that I was glad to read your post... .. I don't mean that I'm glad that you have AS in your feet, but just glad to read of others going through the same thing.

The emerg doc had blood work drawn, but I havn't heard anything from that, so I'm presuming that the uric acid levels were normal. The foot isn't getting any better either, and is so painful that I'm 'favouring' it badly, and now creating problems with my lower back/hips because of my 'funny' walking position.

This disease sucks doesn't it????? I'm going to call my family doctor today to see if he will order some steriod shots from our local hospital. Here in Ontario, we have a wicked shortage of Doctors, so my family doc is an hour and a half drive up North from here. It's more of a planned outing to go see him than a 'drop in' basis!

Hi Debbie and WELCOME TO KICKAS!!!

We share just about everything here as you will notice, and it's a great place for information/friendship. It's the best place on the net as far as I am concerned!

I know what you mean about elevation/icing doing squat. I've been doing as Cheryl suggested every night, but I'm finding that the foot is still swollen badly. Plus, the lying down on the couch with my foot up for an hour or so makes my body stiff... so then I'm gimping around like an old fart when I finally get up!!

I'm calling my Doc today to see about some shots...... I've got to fit them in around the Maple Leaf schedule though! I don't want to find myself sitting in Emerg while the game is on!

Take care! Max
