I was just wondering if anyone flares up from eating brown rice, soy or rice dream?

I have been eating soy yogurt without any problems now for a couple of weeks and its quite tasty-

I would appreciate any info.- Thanks! Shari

Is soy yogurt like soft tofu that's been played with?
Tofu is so cute. You can put anything on it. I put shredded coconut on mine and sweeten it and eat it with a spoon...okay, it's not really cereal, but at least it's in a bowl.
I think the test of any food is an individual's reaction to it...I don't have much luck with anything labeled "yogurt" anymore but I know others on here can eat some of the more pure dairy varieties without added milk solids or starch.
If I am having a really intense day physically sometimes I eat a small amount of rice. The thing that really gets me badly is the dreaded "modified food starch" products and gluten (wheat flour starch) products that have been subsequently fried in processing...bleeeahhh.
The only soy milk product I use is Soy Dream Original Enriched, which does not have added thickeners, which I put mostly in tea for "white stuff". I don't like my reaction to Silk brand soy milks at ALL, bleaaaah, I don't know what they do, other than use calcium cabonate as a calcium source, but bleeeahhhh. I've gotten tea at Starbucks with Silk Soy milk and the next thing I know I have a splitting headache. I won't drink Rice Dream because it would have to be both starchy and in liquid suspension, which causes more problems than a little plain rice.

brown rice: I would stick to white rice. I tried rice bran and reacted to it, and that to me suggests that white rice is safer. It is possible that my rice bran was adulterated tho.

soy milk: i tried soy milk that was supposedly clean of rubbish additives and still reacted quite badly. Others have had similar problems to soy milk .. eg. ted

rice dream: no idea.

soy yogurt: no idea, but I bet they get too much of the starch content into the yoghurt.. ? Soy beans are generally not safe. (Tofu is only safe because the processing method removes the soluble starch and crude fibre)

Hi Shari,

Brown rice is a fringe food for me... when I am doing well I can eat, otherwise it will set me off. But I am also on no meds and therefore symptoms will not be masked from pain meds. If you are on pain meds you are combating AS on two fronts and may be able to eat.

Unlike Zark... I find brown rice much, much safer than white rice. Problem with a lot of store bought white rice is that it is refined and therefore empty calories (no nutrition).

I trialed varieties of white, wild and brown rice and brown basmati rice was easily the safest for me.

My 2 cents for you.

Well like I said , I had only tried rice bran and have made an inference from there. My premise could be flawed :-) ie. that if rice-bran is bad then brown-rice is bad. But it certainly is enough to make me wary :-0. There is also the possibility that my rice bran is adulterated, or perhaps the processing (grinding) of the rice bran changes the way the gut flora interacts with it. I shall put it on my list of things to test..

I don't believe I have ever seen brown basmati rice before! Good idea though, ultra low Glycemic Index I suppose. I know ted likes his short grain rice :-) his research taught him that it had a high amylo-pectin content. And pectin should be pretty good for us since a good deal of pectin is found in apples and other fruits.

best regards,
z

I regularly eat a live-cultured soy product called Soygurt available here in Oz
No problems with it (nor with tofu, tempeh)
Other soy yoghurts are thickened
Had to stop soy milk completely.

I don't choose brown rice as i think the skin would impede the process of dissolving the unwanted starches i discard.

Long term use of brown rice seems to be bad for me. This is why I only use white basmati.

People doing diets like NSD called low toxic diet (seignalet) here in france have some problems with soy, especialy soy drink
I avoid soy drink'cause I'm sure it has made my AS flare up few months ago.
I used to eat soy yogurts but the doctor that follow my diet told me that We cannot eat more than 4 yogurts a week, industrial soy seems to contain a lot of aluminium due to the fact it must be cooked with acids to eliminate dangerous molecules in aluminium cylinder...

and you should know that aluminium is not safe for the brain (alzheimer) and for the immunity (aluminium hydroxyde is used tu trigger immunity in vaccins)

Hi Shari,

I seem to able to eat rice without a problem, brown or white. I have a suspicion that soy milk gives me a reaction but I need to try it one more time to confirm it. I also am able to drink rice milk without any problems. For myself though I react to dairy the way some react to wheat. For a while I was able to drink goat milk and eat cheese and yogurt but lately all that is out for me. So it seems it is different for everyone and it can change for each individual as well. At the moment I am off all medications because of stomach problems.

Hi Shari, brown rice (whether in rice or noodle form) is fine for me. I also eat white rice, but only when getting a stirfry at the local food court.

I do use the Silk brand of soy milk and have no problems with it. However, I've never tried soygurt. I only just started liking yoghurt and am a little afraid. My naturopath told me that I am allowed to eat organic yoghurt (even if it's cow dairy) because it's so good for you.

I've never tried rice dream, but I hear good things about it.

My two cents worth, for what it's worth.

Hugs,

Kat
