"The proper name for Turmeric is Zingiberaceae; it is a member of the Ginger family and is also known as Curcuma. It has not been very widely researched in humans, however animal research has been conducted for many years and they have shown this herb to havea number of beneficial medical properties, such as an immune stimulant , a helpful treatment for arthritis, also may help in the prevention of some forms of cancer, heart disease, liver problems and the prevention of cataracts."

This is something I copied from a holistic website, it says Turmeric is immune stimulating. I have read many posts on here from people stating good results with turmeric, and just wanted to check more before trying it myself....

Interesting input on tumeric. Have used a lot in the past for cooking - love curries... But, would using the tumeric in a curry be the same thing, have the same effect? Input welcomed. Thank you. (Have just bought a fresh packet of.) Molly C

I've been using turmeric for myself and my parents for a couple of years now. I haven't really experienced the sort of relief from it that an NSAID can provide. I'm just going on faith that it is doing something good for me, but I really couldn't say what it is.

Very interesting post Brian.

For the last 50 years, my family have been making our own relish with green veggies from the garden. Turmeric is one of the spices that we put in the relish so just maybe, for all these years, this spice has helped me in some way.

It never ever occurred to me that turmeric had any beneficial properties that could help us. Regardless, we will still keep making the relish again and again.

Question

I have read information from this forum that suggests that we do NOT want to stimulate our immune system because the AS has already overstimulated our immune system??

I've read about vitamin C overstimulating the immune system as well--any thoughts?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. It helps remove free-radicals from the body. Free-radicals are often responsible for degradation to bone, soft tissue and causing rapid proliferation of undifferentiated cells.

Some products, such as Echinacia are shown to be natural sources of vitamin C and other chemical substances that are responsible for eliminating free-radicals and can also help stimulate the immune system. Echinacea (in some formulations) is now considered a Traditional-use Herbal Medicical Product and falls under the registration scheme setup by the THMP Directive that came into force recently.

My mother takes Hofels Echinacea & Rosehip while she is on chemotherapy, as it seems to help with her immune system and keeping those 'colds/flu' at bay.

For those suffering auto-immune disorders, it is best to strike a balance of intake for antioxidants, in order to remove the risk of over-stimulation.

Echinacia?? I think if you check around on the Forum you will see notes that Echinacia is not particularly good with AS - sets up reactions or ?interferes with medications (can't remember) but know that I made a mental note to steer clear of Echinacea whereas Glucosamine was given a thumbs up. No doubt another Forum member will come forward on this one.

The Vit-C I think had to do with oranges, citrus fruits can bring on gut problems, and gut problems so often go with AS and other arthritic conditions. I love oranges and all the citrus fruits but am careful as know what can happen - not good!

if you are looking for high level of natural vitamin C, choosen Acerola (malphigia glabra : 4.5% ascorbic acid 16.000 to 172.000 ppm) or even better camu-camu (myrciara dubia : 500.000 ppm). To compare orange is 500 to 4000 ppm.
Moreover these vegetal extracts (when done correctly) are high in magnesium and other minerals

When opting for Herbal remedies, please ensure they are manufactured (prepared) by established companies that operate to GACP, GMP and GDP.
