tonight i was doing my typical research on AS and stumbled across something very disturbing. apparently there are lawsuits against smith-kline concerning their lymerix vaccine that was pulled from the market in 2002. the claim is that lymerix induced autoimmune arthritis and/or lyme disease in some people that received the vaccine.

i received the vaccine in 1999. around the same time i started getting AS symptoms.

what's interesting is that i have started getting new symptoms that are consistent with lyme disease such as testicular aches and tingling/numbness in hands. lyme disease also can cause bowel changes like that of IBS (which i have).

i never even thought about this possible connection.

what if my arthritis was induced by this vaccine? i am hla-b27 negative as well.

oh man i am frightened.

I don't know much about that vaccine, but I have an oncle with Lyme disease. He didn't get it from a vaccine, but from a the bite of an insect. I don't know the name of this bug in english (in portuguese it's called "carraça"). What I know is that he has very bad periods, even gets hospitaled from time to time. And Lyme disease can cause pain in joints.
It is a very nasty, but it is possible to control it with meds, and it doesn't kill anyone.
I also think that Lyme disease is not an autoimmune one, but I'm not sure. Anyway your AS maybe result of another infection. But it is difficult to say. Do you recall other episodes in your life connected to infections? I know I do, and I am also B27 negative...

Take care

yo hiker, aloha

lyme is something i know a bit about; I live in connecticut whence 'old lyme' is located and i have a dear (no pun intended)
friend who's had lyme disease for a dozen years.

lyme is caused by a bite from a tick that lives on deer and/or the common brown mouse...it's a spirochete...
the whole disease process is very complex, made more so by treatment that induces or seems to induce a 'cure'
only to have the disease come back stronger...it's a very difficult diagnosis and treatment process...
on the net there is a group called 'lymenet'...with your voiced concerns, you ought to at least consult a "LYME-LITERATE"
doctor...and i mean it not just any anybody, but someone who DOES lyme.

your situation will be complicated because of your taking of antibiotics...very...yes the lymex vacine was found
to cause the disease...in connecticut we had two full days of public health hearings on lyme just last year...
every doctor noted that lyme will cause a systemic arthritis when it gets going good, and curing the lyme also
cures the arthritis...for people (who don't gobble antibiotics) the standard option is two weeks of IV antibiotics;
in complex cases involving repeated problems they use a long term combination of methotrexate and a heavy
antibiotic for a six month period.

best of luck
