hey...perhaps you have me mistaken for someone else...i never advocated the atkins or any other diet plan to you.
although, several of atkins 'observations of fact' are indeed correct...his original point of nutritional questioning
came from his medical practice as a cardiologist who noted frequent incidence of diabetes amongst his customers.

if you read more here, I am one of those heretic, non-believers that calls their NSD diet a religion not science.

the 'diet plan of a quack' is a non plan that lets you get to being 60-80 lbs overweight and then lets you think
that walking from the car to mcdonalds is 'exercise'...just plain coddling fiddle faddle.

now many, many years ago i weighed 150 kg...so i do know a fair bit about this subject...i am personally
one of those once 'morbidly obese' who lost greater than 100 lbs and kept it off for 30 years.

what i can't get over is the ' Minister of Funny Walks ' who insists on the pedometer.

have you had a basal metabolism test ? how many kcal's per hour do you burn at rest?

and, again, i humbly suggest the persuit of the question of a hernia as the source of that original
complaint of muscle spams around/under the diaphram...this is something common and fixable.

all the best

Ben,

you still have it totally wrong regarding the reason for wearing a pedometer. You have it totally wrong about the measuring of steps to say McDonalds.

The purpose is to ensure that I am making the effort to walk because it is such an effort to walk when my feet are hurting. This is exactly why I am trying to get through to people that they are looking at this in the wrong way.

Also, I started wearing a pedometer well before my doctor began actively encouraging me to wear it. That is a part of what you have not understood, and most who have responded have failed to understand.

The pedometer is a measurement tool. It also acts as a tool for encouragement. For example, if I have an agreement that I will try to get to 7500 steps per day, and I am actively going above this point because I am taking those walks, then I am feeling encouraged to keep on going knowing that I "can do it".

I have excruciatingly sore feet. They swell in the heat and the humidity. It is even more difficult to get moving when my feet are in that swollen condition painful condition. That is why, if I can report that I have taken 9000 of my size steps (which is probably the equivalent of a daily walk of 2 miles) I am being encouraged because I know that I can keep the activity going. Those 9000 steps were costly with the pain levels, although I did spring back a bit better than in the previous week. The difference happened to be that I had more fluid during the day and was not hit so hard with dehydration.

I went through three pregnancies where I could not walk very far because of nausea and in the first pregnancy the need to go to the toilet if I walked any distance. I have not been able to lose all of the desired weight since the birth of my youngest son almost 23 years ago. I get it down, and then it shoots up again. This could be caused by my diet or it could be caused by lack of exercise due to the consequences of falls and sore feet.

I maintain that exercise is the key to my success in weight loss. I am not talking about excessive exercising. I am talking about having a consistent sensible program so that I am daily increasing my activity levels. I have been run down because of fatigue issues. I feel so drained that I do not want to get in that walking exercise. The pedometer acts like an added incentive and it gives me a goal. I can see nothing wrong with that. I am very angry that you dare to critize my doctor when he has spent his time trying to help me through all of this pain and to encourage me to get moving so that I am helping myself.

Maggie

Hi
Thank u very much maggie. I only say what i mean and feel tho.
I am sorry to hear ur mum and sis have arthritis in the back too, here i deffo see where the family history link comes in. My mother also has fusing in her sacriolic joints but has never been dx with AS. And car accidents i am so sorry to hear that too, i have never been the same since mine 2 and a half year ago, and i am very sure it aggravated the AS. I had a so called whiplash injury, and injuries to my thoracic and right shoulder of which i am left with some nerve damage in my right arm. Its my personal opinion that any such injuries like mine and urs can aggravate AS.
I totally agree that by telling others about our own experiences, can b of very much help to others. In fact i have read some posts in the pasts and have had no experience of it myself, and hoped not to, and then i have later found myself posting the same thing months later.
I hope i am making sense i think i should go now am tired and should try and get some sleep its quart to 3 in the morning and i have had no sleep yet thanks to my sciatica, and my hands feel like they are on fire from all this typing!

Maggie,
Great that your Doc. got to see it happnen!! Wow! I've had complete body contraction starting with the midriff and abdomen muscles. It has to be nerves involved. There is a condition called Chostochondritis or Costochondritis )?) and when your midriff muscles spasm they like turn to stone! Pain like a knife stab. All I could do is hold my breath and wait for it to go away.
There is another thing I noted when bending off to the side a bit it will spasm and I think this is the spine and muscles attached to it. It gets cramped.
Hope your Doc. can give you some help with this. Mine came and went. Just never know...but I do know how it hurts you and I'm so sorry.
Best Wishes,
Kewanee

Kewanee,

you are describing the pain in a very precise way. Interesting ;-)

I am fortunate that it does not happen too often but when it happens it hurts. The reason I mentioned the pedometer in the first place happened to be that the position on my waistband seemed to be a factor when I did lean the wrong way. This can also happen when I am wearing a belt, and for the same reason that the object that I am wearing will dig in a little bit. This does not set off the spasm but will make it worse. Does that make sense? It usually happens when I lean to the side to pick up something to the floor. As you say, you have to wait for the pain experience and the spasm to pass. It seems to be in the midriff and upper abdominal area. Your description is very close to what I have experienced.

My doctor is a wonderful man. He works very hard and he gives all of his patients very necessary attention. Then to boot he is a father of 10 children. He is very considerate and very gentle. He made the suggestion about walking, and the only measurement that I have to ensure that I am getting in adequate walking has been to wear the pedometer. I am taking a break because of the hot humid weather. My feet are extremely sore, and the balls of my feet are very aggravated at the present time. Yesterday I could barely walk after only a small amount of exertion. That is another reason why I wear the pedometer, so that I ensuring that I am exerting myself to adequate levels so that I can encourage that weight loss that I desire. Yes, I have lost some weight because of my exercise program.

Actually, I get other spasms that are actually quite amusing, such as when my fingers do their own thing. It happens a lot.

The midriff spasm is very different from the other type, when it happens. It can happen either side near my rib cage, but seems to include the muscle around my stomach. I only have to lean in a certain way and I tend to set it off. It hurts a little bit and the pain is sharp, but it is not going to kill me. I was just wondering if anyone else had this happen to assess whether it was a common symptom.

Hi
I am sorry i cant b of much help on this one, but after reading the post again, a thought struck me, i could b way off here, but it was just a thought. These muscle spasm that seem to b around the midriff, feels like around the stomach, could this b something to with the stomach and bowels. IBS and crohns seem to b very common factors of AS i am wondering if it could b related to this. I dont know if u have any other symptoms of the above, but i couldnt help thinking it might b possible this could b a smptom of a mild form of it.
Like i say i am certainly no dr, and i could b way off here, but its just a thought.

Heather

it is something that crossed my mind. I have had a brush with IBS but it is under control. However, if my bowel is extended because of constipation, and it happens, then yes, it is a possibility.

Again, this is well worth a thought that there could be a connection.

But I am still HLAB27 negative and I do not have any bacteria in my bowel that could be causing my symptoms.

Maggie
