Hi Heather,

I just did a quick search on Tramadol's side effects too and didn't find anything relating to reduced libido. However it was my boyfriend's doctor that told him it could happen when taking large amounts of it. It's funny, he took it for nearly a year before experiencing this effect, and right before he 'lost it' his doctor asked him if he was experiencing a loss of libido. He hadn't noticed a difference at this stage but a few weeks later it started...

I'd actually thought it was more likely to be his antidepressant for awhile, but he was able to come off of those in September, so now the only meds he takes are Tramadol and occasional aspirin. It was quite a sudden thing and such a complete 180 that we don't think it could have been caused by factors external to his AS and/or Tramadol.

It's good to know that you're not experiencing the same side effect, but I do think it's likely to be a combination of Tramadol and him just not wanting to be in close proximity with anyone. Maybe there are other contributing factors that we haven't thought about, I don't know. It's an issue we've explored thoroughly though - basically I don't think he'll ever get back his libido unless his AS symptoms were to cease somehow.

I'd also be very interested to hear whether anyone else on Tramadol (or just anyone on this forum) has experienced these effects.

hi
altho i take between 300- 400mg tramadol a day (400mg bein the max dose even tho sometimes in so much pain i have taken more) in a flare i do find i am so irritable and spiky i just want to b left alone, i really think this is due to the amount of pain.
fromt the other side of the fence i guess its easy to keep assuming things even tho thhings have changed ( am i right here?)
take care

I have thought a lot about your post before deciding to answer. I know that it can be a real problem. I have such pain and lack of mobility and in the last 1 1/2 my sweet hubby developed severe RA.

Will she sit down and talk with you about the situation? Will she go with you for counseling. Sometimes it is easier when there is a third party there. (Experience speaking) Staying connected is such an important part of any marriage. However you can. A little bouquet of flowers along, lots of compliments, door opening, helping around the house, showing appreciation all are great ways to start being romantic again. And for we ladies, the same thing works. I compliment him on how he looks, his beautiful blue eyes, his beautiful hair, how proud I am of him to have him for my husband, surprising him getting his vehicle cleaned up, keeping his clothes looking spiffy. Anything that I can think of to show him I care.

If you love someone, that is all that matters. Sometimes even just cuddling watching TV, giggling over jokes, working on a project together. Just little things to get you connected again. Also, we pray that God will give us the physical strength to show each other our love.

For 2 people who are in tremendous pain and considered Sr. citizens, we do very well.

I know this is a very important subject for all of us. It is a God-given gift.

Blessings.
