If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Great work, Charlie:
I hope all goes well when you break your fast, and that you can keep the rebound effect to a minimum, although sometimes it takes a few more times to really clean things out.
NOW people will understand that there is SOME connection between eating and AS...well, unless they are rheumatologists!
Health to You, John

Disaster Last night (end of day 6) my will power crumbled and i resolved to start eating again in the morning (ie today). Before bed i drank half a cup of olive oil to line the GIT/help flush the liver and took 3 probiotic capsules to re-establish the correct flora. All seemed great. This morning however i woke up with terrible pain in my lumbar spine. Muscles almost going into spasm. Could hardly put on my socks. What has happened!!!! I can only attribute this to one of two possible causes. It could be thet the proboitics are starchy, but i tested them with iodine and they were negative. Or it could be the Jarisch-Herxheimer flare i was expecting around day 4, but this is day 7! Any ideas on this John? Anyway as a result of this unfortunate set back, i have not eaten today either, and will try to persevere to tomorrow or beyond. All the best to you all Charlie

Rebound effect i would have to say has been kept to a maximum....
Started eating again about 6.30pm last night (7th day). Started with a tin of tuna fish with a small amount of egg whites, olive oil and a little lime juice (nothing at all sugary). After an hour i then had some more egg whites with some pineapple and green grapes. After another half hour i had blueberries with a litte honey. All very small portions.
Before bed i started supplementing again. Calcium & Magnesium and Vit E 40 mins before bed then flax oil, salmon oil and vit D just before bed. All tested with iodine and all negative for starch.
I wake up thins morning in terrible terrible pain.....everywhere. All the previous places. lower and upper back, ribs, left hip. Very bad abdominal pain too, especially in my lower right side (appendix?)
I appears my GIT is in such a bad state that i cannot tolerate even non statchy foods. All eating is bad.
A week of starvation has left me absolutely no better off. I'm anoyed, tired and confused.
Show me the antibiotics. Show me the anti TNF Show me the morphine
Over and out
Charlie

Charlie, I dont know how old you are, but I really know how you are feeling at the moment. It would seem to me that even a small amount of starch (like in a supplement ie most tablets are starchy) does you in. As a young man around say 30 35ish I was definitely like that. Thinking Im in pain where the hell did I get starch from. Hope things get better for you Charlie. George

Oh Charlie! I meant to post yesterday and I realized last night that I hadn't posted. I should have got up and posted anyway! I am sorry, I know that even one reply from someone can make me feel better when I am miserable. I really feel for you Charlie [and Gilly too!] but please don't give up on the NSD! When I read this post regarding your eating last night, I was thinking to myself, maybe it was just too much food! I know it was only little bits at a time but.....if you started at 6:30 pm that doesn't give your tummy much time to digest before you go to bed....please don't be offended...and I do think you should eat....just stick with smaller amounts and put a larger time space in between them. That is only my opinion though! I hope DragonSlayer will post with his opinion! and that is the opinion I would go with! Again I am so sorry about how you are feeling right now! I will tell you that I did something stupid last week! I had read a post from DragonSlayer [and I take full responsibility!] replying to a post regarding eating some starch. I took his advice to the other person, totally forgetting about my own iritis and situation! That night I ate spaghetti [last tuesday] only about 1/2 cups worth, but the next day before I even got up I knew my iritis was back! [**BLEEP**]! the NSD had taken care of the iritis and the last eye doc appt I had showed no inflammation! So I reread John's post and see the important part I had missed, John said some starch may be okay but to definitely stay away from potatoes, bread, and you guessed it, pasta. Again, [**BLEEP**], which is why I take full responsibility for my actions. However it has almost been a week and I have been strict NSD and my eye is still . And I have to see the eye doc again tomorrow! I am actually going to be embarrassed! Charlie I hope my story makes you feel better! Please don't give up on the NSD, it will work! Also, your 8 day fast is one of the most courageous undertakings that I have heard of in a very long time! You should be proud of yourself, I know I am proud of you and I am sure Gilly is too. Need any more help, I am here for you. Rita [your appendix IS on the lower right side, get it checked out ASAP]

Charlie, so sorry to hear this didn't work for you. I only know from my own experience that NSD does work for AS. Definetly. (combined with an exercise program as well) Common sense is telling me you have some other underlying issues as well.
If NSD didn't not work for me, I was going to go for the meds as well, because living in pain would not an acceptable option for me.

I'm suspecting the tinned tuna may have had a broth containing grain starches in it. I know I have to be really careful with that stuff. Barners, I feel really bad for you. Try going to just fruit the first few hours to start breaking a fast.

Hey Charlie!
I'm really sorry for you being in such a horrible pain. I hope John or someone else can give you some good advice.
Have you been on any other drugs than NSAID? I know they are not the best way to go, but maybe you could give them a try.
Salazopyrin is not that bad and often really helps. Methotreksate and cortisone I wouldn't recommend to go if you have the choice (I have been on them for months, side effects are bad and there is the risk of osteoporosis etc.).
I don't like taking the meds but I just don't have any other choice at the moment. If I don't take my NSAID the pain is just too much ( I feel I'd rather die than take the pain..).
TNF is very scary but I think I'll go for them if nothing else helps. I think Megan is doing both NSD and Enbrel and is finding that helpful.
I hope you find your way with NSD and gut healing and will not have to go for meds.
Take care!!
Kaisa

Hey, Charlie:
Sorry about the re-flare, but as I wrote to you I have had the exact same thing happen and there is a better explanation than hidden starches--fasting causes whatever we eat to go directly to the colon and cause mischief; sugars are not so readily absorbed after a prolonged fast, and our protective mucosa is thinned down, so our lesions are more exposed.
You can overcome this quickly, and I hope that you will decide to tough it out despite the 'feeling' of going backwards; you have done much more lasting good for yourself than you know of, especially right now.
Hang in there and we'll be here for You, John

DragonSlayer: in your opinion, what should Charlie do now? what do you think he should eat? You said he 'can overcome this quickly'--what should he do to overcome it? Hoping for answers, [for Charlie and for me!] Rita
