Answers.com says "Generally, AS progresses for about 10 years and then its progression levels off." Is this true?

Maybe its true, it inflames you for 10 years. Maybe the pain after that ten years is from all the damage and injury done. Anyone else have an opinion?

Hi,
This could be true for average person, but not for me. I'm 19 years since diagnosis, 26 years since onset, and still progressing away... Much of my trouble these days is AS complications, but I am still fusing, and going through more pain, now that I have mechanical damage, nerve problems, heart problems etc.
I used to hear something similar, but it involved the age of 40.
Either way, I would like to hear that a lot of us do see the 'leveling off' or even remission after some point in time.

HLA-B27+, JRA diagnosis in 1981, re-diagnosed as AS in 1988. Also iritis, colitis, and psoriasis. NSD + low carb helps me. My health makes it hard for me to post in a timely way.

Absolutely not true. I dont know what "progression levels off" really means - AS progression = fusion. Levelling off would mean what then? Ive been at it for about 20 years with continued "progression" and im sure there are "veterans" (said nicely lol) here who can attest to much longer. Its a very misunderstood condition. Report listed late Feb early March 07, even suggested that inflammation & fusion are not linked and should be treated separately. Hope its a good day, Patrick

Greg had it since teen years and still going strong at 51.This AS effects every one different but i am still amasied by all the bad info out there.still take's to long for docs to find it the the rest of your life try new things to help.This site has such a wealth of info from every where in the world.we are luck to have it.

I dont think so, this is my 16th year dealing with it and I am having more problems now than I have ever had....I sure wish it were true though.
There are still ALOT of things about this disease that are unknown and misunderstood, alot of us are diagnosed with something completely different or not believed.

Booo! Thanks for the bad news James.  I used to hear about it fizzling out too. I still hear "scholars and medicians" say that "AS is not a serious disease and most people with AS can live normal lives." NORMAL because we hide it so well, and people have no clue the amount of discomfort, pain, disability, and health problems AS causes! BleEeP!
Sometimes I think my body is an inflammation nation.
AS for 20 years
HLAb27+, i think there was talk a negative result at later date, but never confirmed.
Have been on many different anti- inflammatory drugs (naproxen to arthrotec to vimovo). Now off all prescription meds except occasional advil or tylenol.
Don't underestimate the power of icing (I bought the biggest ice pack i could find and it is good at numbing pain).

I really wish that was true aswell...I've been battling it for 30 years now and no sign of it letting up.
