I am writing a paper for college and I choose to do it on AS and I was wondering if a few of you nice people could answer my questions for me so I can educate other people on Ankylosing Spondylitis.

What has caused you the most pain: Most of my pain is in my SI joints, Lumbar spine, and sacrum. My neck, shoulders, upper spine and very weak ankles which caused me to fall a lot, is also affected.
How long have you had AS: I was tested for the gene HLA B27 and found to be tested positive that was in 2005.
Where did you start to fuse first: I first started fusing at sacrum and SI joint. I have also a hair line fracture on the L5. Also between each disk there, I have cysts on the right side. This has caused problems, which are just starting on my left side and is being investigated now, with the use of a MRI with contrast.
How old were you when you first started getting symptoms: I have had back problems, but not bad enough to think about asking questions about for many years. In 2004 and 5 after surgery, a infection caused my arthritis(s) to flair even AS. Major allergies and liver problems has me dealing with my pain without the help of medication.

oakgirl, aloha alohaben lower back/butt and eyes...and falling due to unstable ankles started talking to doctors about my back more than 40 years ago...AS diagnosis 1987 si totally fused (stiff upright, not bent over) 42/43 years ago + please help oak, best aB

How long had AS: 30 years
Where did you fuse: Haven't yet, but SI joints bilaterally are starting to fuse. Narrowed and bony outgrowths.
First symptoms: Shoulder at age 21. Saw doctor who wanted to operate on it. I refused. Then went to SI joints and lumbar at age 26.

What has caused you the most pain:
Depends. Different joints have been 'the worst' at different times. I'd say the worst though has been my knees (both had 'fluid' on them and were so swollen standing was painful), and my eyes when I had iritis. My Right hip has been awful too with nerve pain in the past.
How long have you had AS:
Officially for 7 years.
Where did you start to fuse first:
I haven't fused.
How old were you when you first started getting symptoms:
I'd be willing to bet I was about 13. Of course, nothing was diagnosed until I was 26.

low back
while working in the fields at 12 years of age, I
just cried because of the pain in my knees
my sed rate was near normal, sp they said it was
psychological
How long have you had AS:
I started having pain in 1963
Hospital for a month in 1965
I am gene negative.
Where did you start to fuse first:
low back / two places
but not complete fusion
other symptoms are distressing to me
How old were you when you first started getting symptoms:
junior high

How long have you had AS: 22 years - 3 weeks after an appendix operation which kicked it in.
