Hi all

The deed is done, I'm pregnant (HURRHA!), had my NSD diet analysed by a nutritionist, who said it was PROBABLY fine as long as I eat enough and a lot of fruit (dried and fresh) and now I'm having MAJOR carb cravings.

When I say major I'm talking of dreaming of beans, rice and potatoes. I assume my body is telling me something. And here comes the catch22: through strict NSD I've come off all medications and even managed to stop recurring Iritis. Which is great, however, now I'm worried I really should be eating some complex carbs, at the same time I'm pretty positive this will at least start another Iritis if not a major flare. Which will mean some kind of pain medication.

So, I'm in the position of having to decide whether to potentially hurt the embryo (I'm in the 8th week) by not eating carbs, or with medication.

Today I've succumbed had and some wild rice, I just had to give in. Normally I'm really disciplinded, but I couldn't help it anymore. Now I'm holding my breath and waiting to see what is going to happen.

Now my question is to you guys out there, what complex carbs could/should I try? I was thinking of wild rice, a bit of beans (soaked over night the SCD way), some squash and sweet potatoe maybe. I know that I get the worst reactions to wheat/grain, so I try to stay of that.

Well, I am very confused and worried and not sure what to do. Any thoughts appreciated! And if there are any girls out there pregnant and trying to do the diet, I'd love to hear from you of course! Thanks!

Congrats on the pregnancy!!! My wife is beginning her 13th week, so a bit ahead of you at this time.

I know they have a statement her at Kickas regarding NSD and pregnancy and do not advice. I would agree it sounds like a catch 22, but I believe some women here state that during pregnancy their AS symptoms improve. Maybe you will be as fortunate.

As for starch... I would look into the following whole grains: brown rice, aromath, millet, quinoa.... they are more easily digested from my reading.

Also ask your doctor regarding digestive enzymes, maybe they can help break down food for you. I did see on my brand (still leftover from living in states), states to ask doctor regarding taking if pregnant.

I hope you can find some solutions. Take one day at a time and I will pray for the best for you.

Congratualtions!

I don't think their are any nutrients in carbs are necessary during pregnancy or any other time. Here are some good links you can research and decide.

Hi!

Congratulations!!!!

The only advice I can give you and the only thing that works perfectly is for you to almost cut out carbs entiery. Eat only small amounts of vegetables every day and max one fruit per day. You should instead heavily increase your intake of fats, especially animal fats. Start eating lots of bacon, eggs, cream & cheese. Especially egg yolks and bacon fat is great. But be shure go eat other meats aswell especially fatty fish since omega-3 fatty acids are extremely imoportant in the development of a babys brain. Ofcoure the essential omega-6 fatty acids are important aswell but easier to come by. Belive me, fat is the best fuel for human bodies!

Congratulations!

There is no reason to be off the NSD while pregnant. The human race did not evolve eating flour products and the carbohydrate boom is quite recent. Eskimo (inuit) mothers gave birth to perfectly healthy babies with almost no carbohydrates in their diet at all.

However, if you are having cravings during this special time, I would not totally ignore them but would try and eat, as Tim suggests, more unrefined and natural sources of starch and as Sverige suggests, fats are an important part of the NSD and can help with the starch cravings, but 6-8oz 3X day of unsweetened concord grape juice can also help quash the starch yearnings.

Rice is not so bad, being fully natural, and I can get away with this on occasion, also.

Are you getting enough calcium and magnesium? Are you taking those supplements? Being low on those will make starch cravings for anyone.

I would avoid wheat like the plague but introduce small amounts of some of the other things you already suggested.

Hi Christina - congrats on the pregnancy - must be great being home!

All I can suggest is eat more sausages - lots of fat and protein will leave you feeling full and provide more calories than carbs.

I don't agree about the fruit. Most likely they caused the carb cravings, especially the dried fruit, with concentrated sugars. Try adding organic unrefined coconut oil to your diet instead. That with lots of meat, veggies and eggs and you will be eating more healthy, without the cravings.

I would agree with dried fruit can cause cravings if eat quite a bit. I always mix dried fruit with nuts to offbalance the sugar from the dried fruit (provides protein and fat).

Thanks to all you guys for sharing your thoughts!
What I have failed to mention in my original post was the nausea and the food aversions that are haunting me! One of my major aversions is fat, and I don't really fancy too much meat at the moment..., so bacon and eggs for breakfest are not possible at the moment.

However, I have started to experiment with wild rice, potatoes, spelt and quinoa. So far I have been doing fine. I'm trying to not go crazy and don't overeat on them and still stay away from wheat. I'm managing the worst bread cravings with almond bread.

I'm very happy to be able to eat small amounts of starch, this really helps with the nausea and keeps the cravings in check (as in stops me from wanting to binge on cake and biscuits).

I am sticking with my nutritionists advice as she really made an effort to understand NSD/LSD, worked her way through Calrol's book and even visited the kickas website to gather information on the diet. And the extra fruit is helping, also because I'm trying not to overdo the chocolate.

So far I have been doing really well in terms of AS and Iritis, please keep your fingers crossed for me it will continue this way!!!!
