Hi Richie,

I have been having a lot of allergy testing done.
If you have AS then you have a leaky gut, so you most certainly have allergies. I have done the blood allergy testing (ALCAT testing for delayed food allergies) Now I am doing the skin testing so I can have the antigen for the items I am allergic to. Unlike severe anaphylactic(sp?)allergies, delayed allergies are to foods that you eat every day.
I tested moderately allergic to corn, wheat, onions, cabbage, turkey, pork, dairy, egg yolks and soy and highly allergic to molds, and egg whites. For me my biggest issues with these foods now that I am aware of the connection is fatigue, bloating and intense itchy areas.
Wheat and dairy make me want to lie down on the ground and sleep the next day. When I eat egg whites I get the intense itchy spots on my abdomen and shins,to the point I could easily draw blood from scratching.
I totally believe delayed food allergies are the missing link for people who do not respond to the regular NSD.
Allergies create inflammation, so it is one more avenue of inflammation in addition to the klebsiella infection. When I also eliminated the known allergens in addition to LSD/NSD I have way more energy and less IBS.
I just started the antigen treatment for the foods I tested positive to with the skin testing, which completely correlated with the blood testing. So I will have to update you on the efficacy of the antigen treatment.
Alecia

Alecia,
Interesting. Do normal allergy docs do this kind of testing?

Rich,

I replied to you over at SAA website and directed you here. As I stated, I believe there is something to food allergies for some of us. The naturopaths I saw all believed in food allergies and wanted me tested. I never had the tests done since I responded so well to this diet.

I believe the more alternative MD or allergist would be inclined to offer this kind of testing. When you read about it on the internet there is a lot of contradictory info., but most MD's don't buy the NSD either so you have to research yourself and make a decision.

Karen - isnt this along the lines of that link you sent me about EPD/LDA? Or did you take that to be just going after the Klebs?

I didn't read the website thoroughly, but my understanding is that this is a process whereby you eliminate any food which might be irritating to you, then add them back and watch for reactions to see what might be bothering you. It's all diet based.

The EPD/LPA thing is sort of like allergy shots. You get immunized with what your body is irritated by and your body slowly learns to get used to it.

Does that make sense?

I really don't do bread or cake any longer but have started the McDougall Elimination diet and then I may try the Cave Man Elimination diet as well. Lastly I'll try the No Starch diet unless I try some other allergen diets which include a rotation diet as well.

I just do not know what I have wrong with me, AS, PsA, or something else so it is hard to determine how to eat so i am trying anything. My Rheumy thinks it is AS or Psoriatic Arthritis or both. However, think of the hundreds of Autoimmune diseases that exist - it is endless.

I know people with AS who have had much success on the McDougall diet so I guess it really is an indivual thing to each of us.

I started his Elimination diet which consists of only brown rice, brown rice flower, tapioca, certain cooked green and yellow veggies and certain cooked fuits to break down the protein. I am eatinhg a lot of brown rice hot cereal, brown rice pasta and sweet ptotatoes and I started this last Thursday and have been feeling better all the time. We'll see.

In do this for about 7-10 days till symptoms subside, then I slowly start to add back in food to find foods causing a reaction.

Alecia, how hard was it to get the blood allergy testing (ALCAT testing for delayed food allergies)?
I saw a good allergist/immune specialist but all he did was ths skin testing and found nothing. I was told the best way is to do it on your own through trial an error, plus it is cheaper. Thatis why I am doing these Elimination diets.

Hi Richie,
The MD I went to recommended the ALCAT test. It only covered about 30 or so foods, but for me it was a great starting point.
You can probably assume allergy to all of the ones they always tell you to avoid... eggs, dairy, soy wheat etc. I was already trying to be NSD so I found it almost impossible to do the elimination, since that would leave literally only fruit, veggie and meat... and I tested positive to pork and turkey.
I agree the elimination is much cheaper and if you are very diligent it will also give you the same answers. I just couldn't do that with a family to take care of.

I tried a regular allergist but he was no help....just skin tests. I found a few recommended alternative practices/wellness centers run by M.D.s but they are not covered by insurance so I do not know if I can afford! This stinks, I wish insurance companies were more open to alternatives!

I did find a Rheumatologist who is very into alternative treatments and I see him next month.

Wouldn't just avoiding the offending food be just as good?
