Did your doctor also tell you to take Calcium and D? That is what my dd dr told her to take because prednisone weakens your bones. She is also on iron because she is anemic.

My doctor has me taking Calcium and Vit D daily. Due to the risks of bones becoming weak due to the AS. I only have had to use Prednisone twice since being Dx'd with AS.

good luck

My son took prednisone while he had ITP. Just a heads up...the sweetest kids in the whole world turn honoree. He was also very hungry all the time. Keep healthy snacks ready at all times. He also got the "moon shape" face and the "hump" on his back. This all went away after time. I don't know how prednisone is used for AS due to me being on Enbrel myself. Good luck to you and yours!

I am on Pred and have been on more than off for 20 - 25 years. Dosing anywhere from 0 to 60 mg. daily. I am tapering now from 40 in December and am down to 8.

My dr. never has told me to take extra supplements because of it. My bone scans are always really good and I am not so young either.
Calcium certainly wouldn't hurt. My vitamin D level has been very low; down to 7 and I am taking a prescription strength now and have it up to 21 and still working on it. You just have to be careful with Vitamin D because it is one that you can get too much of but the Calcium with D would probably be good.

I would certainly give the dr. a call on this one.

It is amazing isn't it the questions we come up with after we get home.

Blessings,
Possi

Take potassium!!!! It helped hugely with the muscle cramps the Pred gave me. No more charlie horses when I took a daily OTC Potassium supplement.

When I was on prednisone my docs had me taking the vitamins, doing bloodwork and periodic bone density scans (every few months?)

I'm currently taking the Medrol dosepack. I've been on and off them for the past 6 months, and my dr. has never mentioned extra supplements.

A lot of doctors just don't get into mentioning supplements, since it is not their "field". Definitely a good idea to take calcium, particularly for females.

All the best,

I've been on pred for about 12 years (20 mg) and just found out recently that my D level was low so I was put on a high dose along with calcium.
Everything has leveled out, but I am going to continue with the supplements anyway.
