Also there is viral and bacterial.

Don't forget about fungal pneumonia! The doctor never explained to me that pneumonia could have viral or bacterial origins. It wasn't until I started looking into other fungal related illnesses that I learned of fungal pneumonia.

Michele, don't overlook this one and discuss with the doctor the possibility of it if you condition does not respond to the antibiotics.

Kind Regards,
Jay

Michelle, I hope your feeling better soon. I had pneumonia about 4 yrs ago and I think I was on about 3 or 4 diffrent antibiotics before I finnaly kicked it. I was coughing so much I ended up breaking a rib. Please get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. I'm praying the pnemonia does not interfere with your meds.

Kim

Indeed - (pcp pneumonia) - pneumocystis pneumonia is now known to be caused by a fungus and particularly affects people with compromised immune systems - that includes patients taking TNF biologics. Symptoms are non productive cough, breathlessness, weight loss and night sweats. Very nasty indeed, I have a friend who has spent the last six weeks in hospital with it and has been told it could take a year to fully recover.

Hi Molly...great idea, reminding me about the kill off of good bacteria, I put yogurt on Mike's list this morning after reading your post, the last thing I need is to go straight into an AS assault after pneumonia...I'm getting plenty of rest, if I blink too long, I fall asleep but I wake up every 3-4 hours, when I wake up, mu lungs feel heavy, so I step into a hot shower and let that steam work on me for about 10 minutes or so....thanks Molly....

Hi Jay...it's ironic that you brought up fungal pneumonia, the guy in the bed next to me in the ER had that...I heard him tell the doctor that he'd been battling it for awhile! While I was in the ER, the doc sent in a respiratory therapist, she gave me a breathing treatment and a sputum collection bottle...do you think they'll culture what they collected? I hope so...that would let me know if it's fungal right? In 2004, my Dad went to the ER with pneumonia and they admitted him to the hospital, he wasn't in a quarantine room or anything and 10 days later, the sample cultured out, it showed he had Neisseria meningitidis, also known as meningococcus, very deadly (mortality rate like 90%, for an otherwise healthy person), they gave Dad his last rites dozens of times over the next 3 months, he lost a lung but I'm very happy to say that he's still with us! Seriously though, they had to track down and treat EVERYONE that he came in contact with.....hundreds of people! And, we were very up close and personal before it cultured out....

Hi Kim...wow, I bet it was horrible to have a broken rib with pneumonia, I'm sure coughing was very painful, I'm resting a lot and drinking a lot of fluids, I don't have much of an appetite though...
