Please excuse this OT post, but many people who are currently taking Armour Thyroid or any of the other natural dessicated thryoid meds may not know what the FDA is trying to do

Mary Shomon has created a facebook page: link below as A place for thyroid patients to coordinate efforts to save natural desiccated thyroid drugs, like Armour & Nature-Throid, and prevent the FDA from removing these drugs from the market.

Just BTW hydrocortescone looks like it is coming under threat as well.

I wonder if the same will happen in Canada? If not I will have to be everyones thyroid pimp for under the table pig thyroid!

As far as I know, it is not happening in Canada (yet) and people are trying to source suppliers and how to get supplies sent to USA and UK as Canada have specific requirements.

Also it is believed that Canada has its own raw material supplier of pharm grade pig thyroid. The EPA and state of Nebraska caused problems to the current supplier of the raw material.(American Labs Inc) emissions problems apparently.

Canada could have a HUGE increase in natural thyroid sales and the export figures will increase :-)

I will be your first customer or (whore)! Listen I was just told yesterday that I am absolutely on my own for finding any form of 'pig' thyroid. I was on the phone calling all over. Found almost a months supply of armour in a city nearby, but even naturethroid and westhroid are becoming difficult to find. What are all of the thousands upon thousands of us that cannot take a synthetic going to do? Die? Thyroid is not something to joke about! My elderly mother - what will she do? This could get serious!!

Just yesterday new rules for getting scripts into US from Canada.

"Somebody has posted information on the Natural Thyroid Hormone forum to say that she had just got off the phone with a rep at Erfa in Canada (they make their own desiccated thyroid extract called 'Thyroid' She says that she was told that the simpler form, "Erfa's Declaration of the Physician" was the form in effect up until YESTERDAY - when they were contacted by the FDA and told that they are now required to use a different form 'Form 1572' which is a much more complicated form and one requiring that doctors state that the drug is "for investigational purposes" . She says that her doctor has refused to fill it out, and says she expects most doctors will refuse to do so also.

She says that apparently, Erfa began receiving orders for 'Thyroid' from US patients in late July, about the time the shortages of thyroid extract began to worsen and that approximately 50% of the orders Erfa shipped to the U.S. were returned by Customs. Erfa then contacted the FDA to ask how they could get orders to U.S. customers. The FDA responded by telling Erfa they should include a copy of 'Form 1572' (completed and signed by the patient's physician) in all orders of 'Thyroid' shipped to the US...in effect tightening the restrictions even more and making it next to impossible for US citizens to obtain Thyroid legally from Canada!"

This is an orchestrated attempt to stop dessicated thyroid and get everyone onto synthetics, ignoring that many cant take synthetics.

Thyroid support groups are mobilizing, spread the word, invite everyone to the save natural thyroid facebook -join the march.

I would like to hear from you who take the natural thyroid, why you take it, and if it was beacuse you were having problems with side effects with synthroid....

I cannot get my doc to switch me, she keeps stalling. However eventually I think if my side effects do not diminish through other means, I will just find a doc who WILL switch me, just to see if the Armour works nbetter, as I suspect it will.

I take armour because

~ it is not man-made
~ it has t3 AND t4
~ i've heard of too many side effects of synthroid to be comfy with it

I have hashimoto's which means my autoimmune system is killing my thyroid and keeping it from working properly. I need all the help I can get to get it to rest and function fully.

My GP thinks it works better with estrogen and also if you can't turn T3 into T4 you need the real thing...

Natural thyroid is available from Compounding Chemists using the same raw material that goes into Armour, Westroid etc.

You will need to explain to your doc what is going on to enable him to write a script in a manner that the CC can fill it.
