My line of thought was the same as Jimmy's. I can easily see why they compare someone with AS to a smoker for actuarial or underwriting purposes. I don't agree with it, but if you think like them for a moment, I realize why they do what they do.

I had this problem too. My husband and I bought a home last year and we applied for life insurance for the term of the mortgage. They wouldn't insure me at all, not even at a higher cost due to my medical history (severe crohns and previously on remicade)... this was even before the diagnosis of AS. Kinda depressing being un-insurable at 27.

My son became uninsurable at 21 months of age. He had bacteria menigitis with septicemia. He has epilipsy(sp), resulting from the menigitis. Now at 30, he still can't get life insurance. He did get some type of term insurance to cover, his mortgage incase he dies. Guess the bank wants to make sure they get their money.
I am wondering what they would do in my case - I take no medication for the treatment of my PsA, don't drink, don't smoke. If I didn't already know I wouldn't get life insurance because of my severe sleep apnea, I think I would like to apply and find out.
Some people with Spondylitis diseases, can have internal organ problems, which can become serious. Most people don't have the internal organ problems.
The insurance companies should look at each person individually instead of lump summing them up together.

We are buying insurance. We are the customer. Something isjust not right here but how can it be fixed? I wish you luck.

thanks for all the feedback guys. i guess i should have looked into my crystal ball - saw my AS dx and switched life insurance before it happened. 
Life is different now.
