Hi all,

A friend came across this phrase and asked me about it.

"Turns on a dime...and gives you 9 cents change"

We both understand the first bit, but hadn't come across the second part before. I gave my best guess, but was wondering if any of you lovely folk could give some insight...

So, I googled it because I'd never heard the second bit before either. A TON of references came up. All of them had to do with cars or motocross or other like stuff.

Hugs,

Hi,

I think it means that it turns faster than on a dime, but with a little 'good intentioned sarcasm' (sarcasmistic?) twist to it.

Take care,
James.

Hmm, I wonder if it could be something like you not only turn on the dime, but the dime keeps a penny for you doing it?

Or it could be a good thing, you not only get a really good vehicle (turning on a dime is a good thing), but you get change back too??

It's weird.

Warm hugs,

Kat

This one definite piqued my curiosity...

The only thing I could find (outside of cars) that might help me understand what is meant is:

"Roy never looked at another horse."He would turn on a dime and he'd give you 9 cents change," Roy said many times. Roy liked the horse so much, he purchased him for the amazing sum of $2,500."

Roy Rogers - Happy Trails

My best guess, finding no concrete explanation of this phrase, is that the horse (in the cited example) had many other attributes (the nine cents in change) outside of it's ability to "turn on a dime".

I don't know as I'm still scratching my head a bit on this one. However, that's all I've got.

Kind Regards,
Jay

I think it's a form of one-upmanship....i.e."My horse is great, he'll turn on a dime." And the next guy says,"Oh yeah, well my horse will turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change!"... grin

Hey there,
You are all hitting it, at least as I have always heard it used in my part of the country. It can be used as Michelle said as a kind of one upmanship, or just to mean that your vehicle, horse, whatever handles/turns better than what is considered to be the benchmark, The Dime!

Thanks folks! My take on it with ref to cars turning was that it is implying it makes those tight turns with ease and then some... It looks like that second part isn't so common.

Jaybird, the only time I have ever heard that phrase used was in reference to horses. I grew up riding and training horses, and a good cutting or reining horse will sit back and spin in place, and if you don't have a good seat you will find yourself on the ground. I think that is where turn on a dime originated, the 9 cents change is just a play off of that phrase.

Having never heard the last part of the phrase before, I was going to write something much longer but essentially the same as what Michelle succinctly put right here. Nice work Michelle.

Brilliance through brevity.

Even my congratulations came out longer than your post...lol
