If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi there
I have just been diagnosed with Colitis and it is horrible. Can i ask if any of you are also sufferers. as terrible as AS is, this is far worse and i'm struggling to cope with it. Any tips would be gratefully recieved.
I've been advised that diet could also play a part in this but it seems that all the foods that i should steer clear of for AS are the ones which i'm told should be okay to eat with Colitis. Help!! I'm hungry but rather scared of eating the wrong thing!
Thanks guys x

Hi, Spanna:
I had colitis for a couple of weeks and it was pretty horrid--triggered a bad flare that included knee edema and iritis.
There was a big problem in that I had a wedding to attend and wanted to do some hiking in the area, also. It was ten days away and I had to get rid of the colitis quickly:
Fasted just over one day; water only.
Next day red apples only and apple juice to drink.
3rd day: In the morning, about 20 minutes before breakfast—6 drops of Atomic Iodine (formerly Atomidine, from the Edgar Cayce ‘readings’) in 4 oz distilled water followed by another 4 oz or so plain water.
Soft scrambled (in butter) whole eggs for breakfast. Welch’s unsweetened concord grape juice.
Fruit cocktail along with lychee fruits for lunch. Some cranberry/strawberry juice. After noon, 15 drops Glyco-Thymoline in 6 oz distilled water, more water as chaser.
Dinner of small salad with vinegar and oil (added extra virgin cold pressed olive oil along with apple cider vinegar). V8 vegetable juice to drink.
Well after dinner--before retiring, the same Glyco-Thymoline dosage.
4th day: More Atomic Iodine, as above, but increased to 8 drops.
Breakfast of lychee fruits and fresh raw pineapple. Took 3 capsules acidophilus after meal with some distilled water.
More Glyco-Thymoline, same dosage.
Lunch of large salad with vinegar and oil dressing as above. Iced tea with lunch.
Snack of raw almonds and raisins—just about two small handsful total.
Dinner of steamed broccoli with butter, California Style lemon pepper seasoning, and raw celery, also. Cod liver oil capsules (2 small size) taken with meal.
A late dose of Glyco-Thymoline.
Borage Seed oil approximately 180mg equivalent GLA, vitamin E (800IU), and 1000mg cottonseed oil before retiring.
5th day:
8 drops of Atomic Iodine.
More soft-scrambled eggs as above. Some cranberry/strawberry juice to drink. Lysine capsules (2) at about total of 700mg. Vit C (ester-C) at 1000mg. with breakfast.
Lunch of fruits: Honeydew melon, lychee fruit, and some grapes. Kiwi-strawberry juice.
More Glyco-Thymoline.
Some almonds and raisins as snack, followed in about 15 minutes by tablespoonful of olive oil, then cod liver oil (2 capsules), and vitamin E. More vegetable juice about one hour later.
Due to what I thought was a septic hip condition, but may have turned out to be a normal AS episode, I had reduced food intake, so the above reflects an abnormally lowered level just after this time.
AFTER short regimen:
Took salads for dinners and omelets (with cheeses) for breakfast and continued with only the Glyco-Thymoline days 6-10. Rather long-standing (>6 weeks) colitis had cleared up; solid evidence supportive of this fact, however, inattention to diet may have brought back milder case around day 14, as I was travelling and ate some ice cream, various soda pop, cottage cheese, some candies, and food volume increased due to exposure to buffets…
This minor discomfort disappeared quickly after another (modified, albeit similar) regimen, however, the preferred therapeutic methods for lasting results might be:
Brief fast (4 days) followed within a few normal NSD days by Edgar Cayce Three Day Apple Diet, then basic NSD alternating one week on Atomidine, another on the Glyco-Thymoline, and then a rest period. Colon cleansings (enemas) should be employed during the fast and the week on Atomidine (every other day).
I have not had a recurrence of the colitis, and have increased my food intake above normal levels several times with no further consequences.
Good luck, John

I am so sorry you are suffering. I have had colitis off and on for years. My dr. said that colitis is kind of a "catch-all" term for things going on intestinlly. I have always taken antibiotics when I have it flare. Have you had a colonoscopy? That usually causes the reason for it. For me, I have diverticulosis and when it is flared, that is diverticulitis (or colitis as my dr. causes it). It does make a difference what I eat.
I hope you get some relief soon. John had some very good input but it wouldn't work for me because of my severe iodine allergy. I hope it works for you.
Blessings. Possi

Hi Spanna,
I had severe Ulcerative Colitis at one time, and now it is at least manageable, but sometimes it still gets away from me on occasion. My first and longest flare lasted 8 months, vomiting, bleeding, down to 90lbs, ulcers, the whole nine yards. I had to find someone willing to admit to the hospital, after being ignored by doctors by saying "It's the Ibuprofen that did it" like they have never heard of colitis.
Once I was in the hospital I wasn't allowed to eat (except for ice). I had to get put on back to back infusions and prepped for the endoscopy that confirmed my ulcers. By the third day, still on infusions, I was allowed some broth. I was given a basic foods to avoid list which was a good place to start with, but I had to experiment a little on my own in order to make it work for me. PS, I think the infusions were antibiotics and the rest was vitamins and minerals.
Everyone is going to be different when it comes to what to eat and what not to eat but there are certain 'things' about food that can upset the GI/colon. For me those 'things' were more or less the textures of foods such as...
Nothing too greasy (including fats of all types, poultry skin, fish, etc), oily, stringy, leafy, seedy, hard, contains dairy/whey, has peels/skins or anything that may be too hard to digest. I still try to do this if my flares exceed a week. I don't think processed foods are safe enough during flares either... so be on the watch for that too. Coffee and caffeine are also not good to have for some people. I can only tolerate lite caffeine.
You are probably wondering what else is left, like I was at first. Well, there is applesauce, broth (low fat or skimmed myself), some soft meat (extra tender or run though a food processor myself), mineral water, sprouts (alpalpha/bean), skinned fruits and veggies, berries (skin the strawberries), bananas (those seeds are ok by me), fruit/vegetable juices, tea, etc.
I think an important part to note is that fasting as long as I can (which for me is only a day and a half) with vitamin/mineral water (flavorless and all natural if possible) is very important because it gives my bowels a break enough to play 'catch up'. Fasting does make it easier though. After fasting start with liquid foods first so that your colon still gets a break and tries to catch up and start to heal.
I hope this helps, Take care, James.

Hi Again, I wanted to come back and edit my reply to you, but I don't see an option to do it right now. Anyways, I wanted to change the first two paragraphs because I remember another user being VERY upset by the way some people reply to other people's posts, as in like a "my ___ is worse than yours" type of way. Those are never my intentions, but I still want to be sure it doesn't appear that way to anybody and everybody.
So if you could, everyone, substitute my first two paragraphs with this...
At one point in time, my Ulcerative Colitis was bad enough and lasted long enough that I required infusions of, if I remember right, antibiotics and vitamins and minerals. That was what I needed to get me through my first and worst flare of Ulcerative Colitis. Sometimes I have still have trouble with it, but I am able to keep it reasonably under control by doing the following.... (see my previous reply)
I hope you find a fast and effective way to control that Colitis. I know Colitis is a terrible condition to have. Feel well soon.
Take care, James.

I am also one of the lucky ones with AS and UC. When I was in the hospital, a nutritionist came by and gave me a list of foods to eat and not eat. I seem to balk at any attempt to have me graze by the side of the road like a sheep or fuss over my diet as if all the world's problems could be solved in this way...maybe this reluctance on my part makes my suffering my own fault but I doubt it.
Food is wonderful and when it's prepared with love, it is all good. That is my personal approach and I know it differs in huge, fundamental ways with many others in here and elsewhere.
I do know that Steak is rough on the system. I also know that I just love steak...choices and consequences is what it all comes down to.
My hospital stay came to an end with the use of Prednisone, which is a cortico-steroid. Wonderful stuff. Since then, I have been taking Asacol, which has proven to be the most reliable and only truly effective drug I've been prescribed for either disease thus far. Even so, there are times I find myself loitering around the toilet far too much some days...oh and immoderate helpings of fruits or dairy will certainly have a direct influence on the rest of my day.
All things in moderation seems to be a good way forward for me but then my struggle is with when to say when. I guess I am a bit of a hedonist in that sense.
Best of luck to you, I hope you find a way to become the victor and not the victim
Chris

Hi Spanna, I came across a couple of articles the other day on IBD, pathophysiology and conventional and alternative treatments. I posted the links in the Alternative treatments forum. They are rather long and some bits are a bit technical, but might give you some ideas about things to avoid and things to try. I have only read the first one so far and found it interesting. Hope you can tame your colitis soon!
