Hello everyone,

My name is Ollie, just new to this site, I am 24 (english/spanish) and I was diagnosed with AS two years ago... at the time it just affected my pelvis and the pain was just that kind of shooting pain I am sure most of you know very well. Certain movemements would cause agonising pain. This would come and go but generally life was pretty normal and painless. I though what's the big deal about this whole thing, its not bad at all!!
The last two months have been hell! my shoulders have become involved, and neck and uppers spine... it hurts all the time from mild tingling to full on aches and pains, oh yeh and I am growing a tail from al the bone fusion that is going on at the bottom of the spine!
It got to the point where even a full dose os nsaids wasn't helping... so I tried the low starch diet...
I havnt been eating bread, pasta, rice, all the obviouse ones and also some of the hidden ones lke in cooked veggies, etc... unfortunately it hasn't worked for me yet... its been about a month now. I was wondering if maybe I am not being strict enough.. I have now cut out dairy and sugar, will this help?? I would appreciate any advice from anyone experienced in this...
Thankyou smile

Welcome to KickAS. I'm glad you found this group, they are a good bunch. Sorry to hear about your progression of AS, it sounds like it is happening fast.

Hey,well what always helps me is (embarassing) take a mild laxative (milk of magnesia or something) get the offending stuff out.Fast for 24 hrs and start over with just meat and salad and add one thing at a time....write down pain levels and what u added. If no pain go on to add more in the next few days,if pain do it again and start over.Periodic multiple water fasting helped heal my gut a lot too.I'm having to start over after Thxgvg got me !!!! smile
Good luck
Basically, all I eat are watermelon and green grapes (I test my melon with iodine)
coconut flour baked goods, coke, white wine, eggs, spinach salad, zucchini, onion, tomato (if passes iodine)regular spinach, green beans, meat of course, jolly rancher candy and a little dark chocolate on occasion...Dairy flares me,as do almonds.

Hiya,

regarding low/no starch diet...just cutting out the obvious starches is not strict enough. Do you test with iodine? Do you know the starchy additives in processed foods to avoid? eg. modified starches are added to alot of foods...E numbers in the 1400 range. Do you have Carol Sinclair's book The IBS Low Starch Diet? Very helpful if you're just getting started.

Most people dont experience miracle results within a month. There may be SOME improvement within that time but most results are gradual over a period of months.

All the best...see you in the NSD and diet-related forum smile

Yep, this is the new format. I have been here a few times since the grand opening and I still need to get used to it a bit more.

I'll be a facebook later tonight. I'll look for you.
Take care,

Ollie,
Welcome, y Bienvenido! I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time with this. You've come to a good place here. Have you tried one of the biologics yet like Enbrel? Sometimes the NSAIDs aren't enough. I'm just learning to follow the no-starch diet myself, I'd recommend Carol Sinclair's book (I think it's published in England) on IBS and the No-Starch Diet. Also the No Starch Diet forum here.

Best wishes.
