hi all,
well..in spite of me thinking i'm too skinny to go l/n starch, i devoured carol sinclair's IBS book last night and i'm feeling VERY motivated!! i realized that my entire life i've relied on bread/grain as a 'nutritional' filler to the detriment of my general health.

in chapter 9, she starts with the 'section 1' food group to eliminate first, i.e. grains, cereals and roots. potatoes and rice are part of the 'section 2' food group to eliminate. my question: has anyone had a good response by simply eliminating the grains/cereals/roots. do any of y'all do potoates?...or any kind of rice?

my goal for feb is to eliminate grains/cereals/roots.

i also just started sulfasalazine today and i'm finally tapering off the oral steroids (due to another severe uveitis flare). the ssz is my first non-nsaid medication for as. i suppose the reality of taking pills is making me think about a diet change.

for skinny minnies...how do you keep your weight up on l/n starch?

thank you as always!

Hi There,

I've been on the NSD for about three and a half months now. I dropped 10% of my body weight in the first three weeks, then it stabilised (I was 76kg, went down to 69kg and stayed there since).

I was worried at first, because I didn't want to lose weight. But I guess my body adjusted and got used to it. I like to think that 69kg is my 'proper' weight, and eating more or less doesn't seem to affect it now.

I've had some good results on the diet. I find my joint pain has lessened considerably, and also find that my stomach trouble is much less.

I just got back from holiday where I cheated (cheated my diet!) a few times. I've found that I really cannot tolerate potatoes, but the occasional slice of bread doesn't seem to hurt. That seems to be different for everyone - some people can cheat a little with certain things, and some just can't.

I got some awesome advice from the guys on this website. Good luck!

It didn't take much starch to keep my sacrum inflamed and in crippling pain when I first started the diet. I went very strict so I had quick results, but even the trace amount of starch found in supplements or even just the starch sprinkled on pre-shredded cheese to keep it from sticking, was more then I could tolerate.

That was 3 years ago, I can now eat potatoes without causing the sacrum to inflame, however, it feeds the fungus which is another chronic problem that inflames my neck, shoulders and upper back area causing pain and stiffness up there, so I don't eat potatoes.

I think once you get to realize all the wonderful whole foods available for you to eat, you won't have any trouble with weight loss. Just don't go hungry, I eat lots of veggies with butter, and avocados with practically everything. Lots of protein, especially burgers, ground beef, ground chicken thigh, ground lamb. Lots of roasted chickens, chicken salad. Wild salmon. Lots of turkey and ham wrapped in lettuce......bacon. Just be sure to get high quality deli meats, Boar's Head is a good brand you can probably get in LA. I eat broccoli, cauliflower, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, avocados, onions, garlic, swiss chard, spinach, parsley, spearmint, rosemary, thyme, zucchini, green beans. Fruits I eat are pineapples, mangos, pears, berries, dates, peaches.

Buy high quality produce, picked when ripe, best from your local farmers market or quality grocer like whole foods. Less chance of being starchy.

Carol's book is great, be sure to test with iodine in the beginning. Starch content can change depending on ripeness, etc. The pineapples at trader joes consistently caused me to become inflamed, so I only buy them at whole foods and never have a problem anymore. Ask the produce person to help you choose a ripe one. Anyway, it just pays to be picky and careful.

Hi,
I'm pretty skinny too and I did lose a bit of weight in the beginning. It took me a while to respond so I was very strict for a long time (I'm still pretty strict), but your body eventually adjusts to using fats as fuel instead of starch. Don't be afraid to eat plenty of fats/oils. If your like me, it's definitely not what your used to but it will help keep the weight on, especially at first. I have pretty much gained all my weight back now. In fact I'm hoping I've gained all I'm going to ha ha.

Good luck,
Annette

an update....i was no starch from saturday afternoon to last night (tuesday) when i cracked and had a white rice dish followed by 2 blueberry waffles (can someone say 'binge'!). woke up this morning with severe back pain at 3 a.m....tossed and turned, alternating between wanting to cry from frustration and scream from anger. i've woken up with early morning pain since october. i just want to wake up with an alarm clock or even the dog barking next door..NOT from pain.

at least i don't seem to have a reaction to the sulphasalazine (but still haven't gotten my bloodwork done yet).

the morning pain was actually easing a bit on sunday and monday.

guess i just have to start over..

Thats all we can do is start over, and keep learning from our mistakes. its not easy eliminating so many favorite foods from our diet, but each time we cheat, we are learning, and it makes it easier to stay on track next time, just keep going, don't give up, you can do it.

Hi,
I went on a binge after 4 months,I guess enough healing took place so it took a couple of wks for the pain to get me.
Well, when it came back, it came back w/ a vengeance! It took 11 solid days of bad pain until it went away. Then a couple of wks later which was last night, after work,I raced my husband, ran so hard I thought my legs were gonna fall off,but from running, not from pain!I beat him!! No pain and I wanted to keep running. He got tired!hahaha
Then I came in and scarfed some Zucchini casserole and coconut chocolate cake.I was hungry after all that running!
I won't cheat again, the rewards are too great.
Give yourself a break and be patient. It takes time.
