Hi Wendy,

Any surgery I've had has been very early in the AM. Typically not after 6:30 am. It never occurred to me that it was because of hypoglycemia. I thought the surgeons were just being nasty. They said I couldn't eat or drink anything after midnight. So 11:59, I have an orange.

I don't have a problem with hypoglycemia over night, I suppose that is because I'm asleep most of the time. So, if I wanted to do a fast I could sleep though the entire fast and come out the other side AS free. Sounds like a plan. Point me to the bed. laugh2 Heheh

Thanks for this Dean. I was actually looking that up when I found the other webpage. It's kind of hard to google the safety of fasting in people with hypoglycemia, when fasting is one of the causes of it, and also part of the 6 hour fasting blood tests. argh.

I, too, am hypoglycemic. I think the only fast I would be willing to do is Edgar Cayce's 3 day apple fast that John has spoken of. Even that I'm uncertain about, but would be willing to try if I could do it when there is no-one around to deal with the emotional ramifications of a hypoglycemic trying to fast. Really, it isn't pretty.

Hi Kat,

My sons took to carrying regular gum around with them whenever we traveled. As the day wore on, and I started "pushing them around" one or all of them would pull out a stick or two of gum and offer it to their dad. Of course with a smile. At that point, my Lovely Wife would carefully direct the entire family to a restaurant. Where we would all once again become friends. laugh2 Heheh.

I found out that I didn't do well on a fast when I tried to do one with a group from our church. I do well though when I tried to go "Low Carb" to lose weight. After a few days on the low carb diet, I get more energy. I never tried it long enough since my AS Dx to know if it will help with my AS symptoms. The low carb diet is really low starch, as it restricts wheat, rice,beans and most starchy foods. I will have to try it again. It's hard for me personally, as I tend to crave comfort food like mac & cheese and puddings when I feel bad. My family gets unhappy because I make most of our breads. They especially love my sourdough rye bread. I just can't stand to smell it baking without at least sampling some. I am afraid I just don't have the necessary "Wont Power".

I can see that many of you strongly believe fasting and starch avoidance is key. I don't understand why you state these beliefs as out and out facts.

Fasting is problematic for many people. It is simply not true that people should feel they would be better off fasting. Nobody should read this site and feel bullied into this starch fasting advice.

I support those who find help with it, but there is the worst kind of arrogance in insisting this belief is fact and that those who do not believe it are lesser beings.

I'm quite willing to admit that kind of arrogance occurs n the medical profession - and it's terrible. It's just as terrible, if not more so, when it comes from individuals who just take it on themselves to be "authorities". Please have some insight into the behavior. Nobody should have to feel defensive about why, for them, fasting is a problem.

Hi I agree with Dean having Diabetes is definitely a reason not to fast. I tried it once when I had to have a barium colonoscopy started going hypo Doctor phoned me and had me eating chocolate to bring me out of it. If I have to fast for any procedure I have to stay in Hospital. Fasting can be dangerous for certain people.

Hi Nancy,

John, whether being asked a question or not, often takes the time to answer with his opinion, and even included the caveat that he's not a doctor this time. His recommendations come from personal experience, so his beliefs are factual in his experience, which is considerable.

While I am not in the habit of running around defending John smile (hi John!) I don't see a problem. Most of us are not professionals and don't pretend to be. I don't fast, personally, and don't feel the need to defend my reasons to anyone.

The beauty of the forums are that there will, almost without fail, be others chiming in with various opinions - all of them based mostly on personal experience, with contributions that often link to additional sources of info. The format generally works, imo.

I understand your concerns, though.

May I dive in here (yes I am usually reticent I know) I have hyper thingy whatsit too, absolutely awful it is when I eat, or don't eat the right thing. Here's my story. (no tears please- I will come through this)

If I have tea with one sweetener (7am ish) and a slice of toast with marmalade each morning. I am fine and survive until about 1 pm ish before eating again.

If I have tea (may I say here that tea is millions of times nice than coffee and you N-Americans don't know what you are missing) and one slice of toast with black currant Jam (Which I adore) guaranteed that by 10am I am shaking nauseous, clammy dizzy almost in a state of collapse......amazing eh, so why does it happen then..ahaaaaaaaaa bet no one knows, I don't
