Hi All,
I have a curious question for you all.
Has anyone noticed that inflamed or fused joints get very itchy
Parts of my spine since fusion have got very itchy at times and I am now having problems with my hands I have bony lumps starting to form on my knuckles and they itch like mad.I think it could be RA because my mother suffered with RA in her hands and Wendy agrees my symptoms could be RA. But the itching is strange any one else noticed this.

Hi Kev,

I've never noticed itching even where I have fusion. I do have one tiny lump of bone on the middle knuckle of my left ring finger; I used to have pain there but no itch. Knuckle joints can be affected in both AS and RA (although there is a different pattern to which are most apt to be involved) but I don't think itchiness is a symptom in either.

Is it a painful kind of itching? Any chance it could possibly be shingles?

I'd mention this to your doc next time you're in.
Sorry can't help more,
mig

Hi Kevin, that is a mystery. I'm with Mig. Please mention it to your doctor next time you're there. I wonder if it could be part of the inflammatory process, or maybe the bony growths could be hitting a nerve oddly. Right out of left field, I might try an antihistamine to see if it helps. Who knows.

I always knew you were special, my friend.

warm hugs,

Kat

Hi mig,
The lumps are very sore but not a painful itch. My spine gets very itchy always has I will speak to Rheumy.

Thanks Kev

Just thinking that the formation of scar tissue can sometimes be itchy... just popped into my mind since you mentioned it's on areas of fusion where you're noticing it. Maybe ask Alan if he's noticed this.

Hugs oh strange and special one laugh2

Hey Kevin

When inflamed ,my joints would have a burning feeling and get redish. The itching that you get sounds to me like it could be a skin problem.I hope you get to the bottom of this.Itching can drive you buggs.
Good luck

I don't think I have had any issues like that but it sounds terrible and I'm sure is a pain in the bum and Im sorry!

I hope you can find some relief.

Hugs,

Lisa

Hi Kevin, interesting symptom. I don't experience "itching", what I experience in more of a "tingling" in my back in areas of fuse or fusing taking place. Oddly though, not where I had my resent lumbar surgery. I also have boney nodules on my nuckles at the base of my fingers, don't have RA so I guess it's AS.
