Oh no Wendy...I don't mind at all, in fact, I appreciate it...as usual, when I find myself in rough waters, I make my way back home...and that's exactly why... hugss

This disaster will be worse than Katrina and Rita. It is one thing that when a farmer plants crops to have his crops wiped out. It is a totally different situation to have his fields poisoned and to remain poisoned for many years to come.

Michelle is correct in that the oil industry provides for much of the economy in La. The fact that there will be some people to call for the end of offshore production would be even more catastrophic for La.

One thing is true is that BP is going to pay out the yin yang for years to come. The headlines today dealt with a new wave of tar and scum heading to the La. coast and I'm not talking about the oil spill. It is all the self serving lawyers looking to line their pockets.

I saw a clip of Imus in the morning on Fox Business where they were discussing a particular valve that is required in the deep sea oil production in the north seas of Europe. This valve allows for activation by acoustic methods from the surface and costs $500,000 a piece. Oh the US government supposedly decided that this was an unnecessary precaution and did not push for this requirement. BP studies concluded in 2009 that what is happening now could never happen and that it would be a virtual impossibility so contingency plans for this catastrophe was never planned for at all.

Someone needs to ask the question to the govt. and BP, "Do you think that the acoustic valve is worth having now?"

I really hope it stays a thin layer, Michelle. That will be easier to deal with I believe. On some beaches, after Torrey Canyon, it was up to a foot thick and had to be shovelled up. So birds would end up flopping around in it.

Such a tough issue - important changes seem to be only made in hindsight.

I really wish it would stay thin too Wendy...but I seriously doubt it, they're already claiming this to be the worst oil spill in North American history...and it's still going on...they're saying that it's like a new oil spill everyday because of the volume the well is still putting out, 1.6 million gallons of oil already....one hot mess!!! I guess all we can do is prepare for the worst and pray for the best...

Yes - I find it bizarre that it's not possible to cap off the well. I mean - is it going to keep pumping until it's dry? Just nuts - the whole thing. And horrific. frown

Hi Michelle,
My thoughts go out to every one affected by this disaster. And am really sad for all the wild life that is going to suffer "MAN" strikes again I don't know why we don't just blow the planet up and get it over with.

And as for the Torrey Canyon I don't remember that was that before TV Wendy.

I hope the wind changes and things don't get too bad.

It is bizarre Wendy...if they would've had the valve that taberge was talking about, they could've gotten control of it almost immediately now they're going to try and cut it off further back in the pipeline, if that doesn't work, they're going to try and "dome" it but the latter would take 3-6 months by BP's estimation...which actually means 6-9 months...so I guess everyday until then...a new spill everyday, which I take to mean that the well is losing the equivalent of 1 average oil spill every single day... confused2

Hi kevin...nice to see ya...you're so right, why prolong the inevitable?! Economically speaking, the price of gas and seafood will set everyone reeling on their heels, I do believe and from a personal perspective, I'm sure life as we know it is about to change...let's just hope it's for the better over-all...tougher safety & environmental policies on these companies should be an immediate concern...lest we forget Bopal...a prime example of the disaster that comes out of letting these corporations police themselves...
