I've heard rumours of this for a long time, at first I thought it was flaky, then I found this site and thought there might be a bit more to it.

I've heard a few reasons as to why the no starch diet might work. One was that it fed micro-organisms that drove the inflammation in the body.

Well here is another idea. Vegetables themselves actually reduce the over development of blood vessels in the body (which is part of the problem with too much inflammation...all those tiny tiny blood vessels grow in injured areas to heal it). So in order to reduce the damage from arthritis eat more vegetables.

The following speech by William Li for ted.com called "Can we Starve Cancer?" is fantastic. Everyone should watch it. Perhaps we can change the name to "Can We Starve AS?"...seems true as it seemed to work well for me (as did some of the chemo drugs I ended up being prescribed...but I didn't like them, made me puke). If anything this brief video will provide you with some real hard data to support a healthier diet to rid yourself of AS.

Thanks for this. It's always good to know when the medicos finally figure out the obvious! wink

I'm being facetious, of course. I look forward to reading the speech.

Great talk. However, saying there is a cure for Cancer/arthritis is getting way ahead of the science. There still is no cure. I read all the 60 comments and one lady said she was a 20 year vegan and was going through breast cancer treatment.
I will have to get my blender out again and start making those live, green smoothies that were mentioned though. I think I'll start with the spinach and pear and then the parsley and mango smoothies. Yumm...

just a quick thought,

think its the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber that are so helpful. for cancer, antioxidants especially useful in dealing with free radical scavenging, oxidative damage a common initiator of mutagenesis --> cancer.

though i'd have to read a lot more to have better ideas. but this is off the top of my head from all the reading i've done to date.

all i know is that when i eat a lot of whole foods: fruits and veggies, nuts, beans, lean meats, fish, etc, i just feel better. a lot of that feeling better for me is better blood sugar control.

True...nothing is the ultimate cure, there are many other things that cause disease and simply eating vegetables and fruit is not a cure all. But after years of reading about healthy diets, the benefits of vegetables, the possibility to reduce the effects of disease with healthy diet and so forth...this short talk offers some scientifically proven reasons. For me this is more powerful than examples of people who have claimed benefits of a healthy diet. This is both proof and a reason why it works. It also draws some links to other diseases, which is something I've been thinking about for years.

I'm really excited about this. It feels like we are coming to a better understanding of how the body works, how disease works and ultimately how to lead better lives through diet, medication, lifestyle and medical intervention. It's no longer simply about symptoms and medication that get rid of the symptoms...its about understanding the very nature of disease, how the body works and what we can do to make it better.

Just to throw a wrench into the works, study results were recently broadcast on the news that eating fruits and veggies may be causing health problems in kids. Not because of the produce itself, but because of the chemicals used in the farming of them. There may (may) be a link to ADHD.

Wash those fruits and veggies well, folks! Who knows how much of the stuff has leached into the soil our produce grows in. We can't do anything about that if we don't buy organic, but at least we can wash the stuff off the surface!
