well heres a confession. never ate anything off my list til today....
Ketchup! i had 1 tablespoon on my ground beef :] but :[ half way thru eating it it didnt taste that great anymore. shoulda had a coke instead!! today is the worst ive felt in 3 wks and whem i hurt more i want naughty food. i guess its cuz since i hurt for no apparent reason i want an explanation. like the saying '...ill give you something to cry about'

AS is just so unpredictable. Things seem to change overnight for no apparant reason and we are left trying to figure out "what did I do differently to suddenly cause this to happen".

I'm so sad to hear that you are feeling the worst you have felt in 3 weeks. I wish I could do something to help you, angel hugss hugss hugss hugss hugss

Hi Tinkerbell, Sunnypower and all the rest of you WONDERFUL support angels that have responded to this thread. smile

I feel like I have really got to know some of you after reading this forum (and lurking in the background) for the last 4 months.

This is one of the few posts I have responded to as I am new to this whole online forum thing, but I can relate absolutlely to what you are saying from one starch addict to another. I have been on the NSD for a few months now. I first did a serious detox and still eliminate caffeine, dairy and sugar in my diet. I noticed a BIG improvement in my AS pain levels after only a few weeks... so there is heaps of motivation to stay on the straight and narrow NSD.

After an emotionally tough time when I lost my job recently and now dealing with elderly parents who are not coping (Dad with severe Dementia and Mum with mild Dementia) I resorted to comfort eating which for me revolves mainly around starchy foods and Chocolate!

I am gaining heaps of inspiration from this thread as I thought I was the only weak willed KickAS'er out there, as it makes so much sense to stick with the diet and yet I find it so difficult. It is a real help that there are more of you out there that are really giving this a go, throughout the good and the bad and returning with new resolve each day.

In my humble opinion it is no coincidence that the original start to this thread was a confession about a starchy Breakfast slip up. Breakfast is for me far and away the hardest meal to deal with as I crave a warm comforting bowl of hot porridge or similar on these cold winter mornings. My pain levels are also worst in the morning so there is the big comfort food factor to contend with as well. I was really pleased to see the post about linseed (flaxseed) porridge so I will be giving that a try.

I can also relate to the idea that "I feel so awful now with the pain that I may as well eat some comforting starchy stuff and blow the diet". I am really going to try to not go down the food route to satisfy my cravings (and low seratomin levels). Instead I am really going to focus on patting my animals. (My house is like a menagerie here with 23 fur kids at last count as we breed Neapolitan Mastiff dogs and Miniature Goats.) Things like patting animals, chanting, prayer are all shown to increase positive endorphins in the brain and regulate a whole heap of the body's hormonal/ brain chemistry pathways. So it's worth a try.

So glad you decided to post in the confessional box, as I'm calling it!

I know what you mean about feeling like you are the only weak willed one... it was quite hard to come out and admit that I have been going off the rails lately. But it is helping me so much, and also I am so happy to see that others feel they can get things off their chest too. If we can't admit our problems to each other here, where else can we? We all have AS and we are all united by it for better or worse, so to speak.

I am so sorry to hear about your recent problems, with work and your parents. That must be so hard on you, hon hugss In times of stress reaching for a vegetable stick is not quite the same as a donut is it?!!!

Like you, I struggle with breakfast so much. The only answer is starch free baking - let us know how you get on with the flaxseed porridge, won't you!

Well, I went nuts over some nuts, and now feel a tad worse for it. frown

Hot breakfasts are still possible.... I usually have a sort of soupy breakfast with homemade stock that I simmer spinach or kale in, sometimes a couple of eggs too or usually a fish fillet or some bacon, or a combo of bacon and egg. Egg yokes have to be runny. Mmmmmm It is a bit like a green porrige. Withough harming any oats...

After having a dinner with adequate protein, three hours later have a carbohydrate snack. Kathleen DesMaisons suggests a potato. Maybe we could come up with a starch-free bed time snack that would help with serotonin levels. The snack would have to be free of protein. Maybe some fruit?

As for depression, Ive just weaned off meds(12 years on them) and I use a multi B with lots of NIACIN
I love hanging with the naughty ones
